    Summary The incumbent will be assigned to the Nursing Specialty Unit (GI Lab). The employee is responsible to provide specialized technical support the the scope of operation needed to operate the Gastroenterology(GI) Laboratory. Responsibilities Major duties, include but are not limited to the following: The incumbent serves as Medical Instrument Technician (GI Lab), GS-0649-07. In this capacity, the employee is responsible to provide specialized technical support to the total scope of operation needed to operate the Gastroenterology(GI) Laboratory. Incumbent operates highly complex equipment which requires extensive knowledge and proficiency to operate and maintain in optimum working order. Calibration and quality control is maintained and monitored daily and during routine and lifesaving procedures. This technique is extremely operator dependent and the process is complex. The individual must use independent judgment in applying knowledge of clinical gastroenterology and proficiency to operate and maintain equipment. The Medical Instrument Technician (GI Lab) must use problem solving skills to optimize the evaluation and tailor the process to ensure that it is comprehensive and accurate. He/she records and interprets the results of the invasive procedure and presents technological equipment recommendation or possible troubleshooting skills to the interpreting physician. Failure to accurately record data and interpret data may lead to an incomplete examination, an erroneous clinical interpretation or both. The incumbent operates highly complex equipment that requires knowledge and proficiency to operate and maintain in optimum working order. The incumbent serves as a medical administrative support and coordinates all associated administrative duties, as well as, clinical duties for the delivery of gastroenterology care during tests and procedures at the VACCHCS. Besides performing technical and clinical patient care while providing assistance during endoscopic procedure, he/she also assumes all technical and safety maintenance pre- and post-procedures for all equipment in the Endoscopy Suite. Incumbent is expected to recognize erroneous results. Incumbents consults the supervisor for technical advice and independently makes recommendations during the procedure. Incumbent consults with Biomedical engineering with operational and equipment concerns and functions to maintain patient safety. Incumbent is responsible for rotational on-call duty requiring independent decision making and analytical thinking skills required during emergency invasive procedures. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Qualifications GS-4: Experience in operating, supervising the operation of, or instructing in the operation of equipment related to the particular specialization for which application is made. Experience gained in the operation of equipment in a specialization directly related to the specialization may be credited through the GS-5 level. GS-5: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-4 which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. GS-6: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-5 which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. GS-7: (a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-6 which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias.2. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures.3. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue.4. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians.5.
