As a Data Science Intern within Valmont’s Agriculture Division Software Engineering Department, you’ll play an important role in advancing data-driven decision-making and irrigation optimization. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with cloud-based data systems, developing predictive models, and collaborating with engineering and product teams to deliver impactful data insights.

Valmont’s internship program provides a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing, and interaction with senior leaders across the company.

What You’ll Do

+ Extract, clean, and preprocess data from Azure-based databases

+ Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities

+ Engineer features for predictive modeling and decision-making

+ Develop and evaluate machine learning models to support irrigation optimization

+ Document methodologies, findings, and present insights to key stakeholders

+ Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate data solutions

+ Identify data quality issues and propose process improvements

What We’re Looking For

+ Junior, Senior, or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field

+ Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation

+ Strong programming skills in Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib/Seaborn)

+ Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure

+ Strong experience in data cleaning, feature engineering, and model development, with the ability to interpret data, solve problems analytically, and translate findings into actionable insights

+ Experience working with time-series or sensor data, particularly in agriculture or environmental contexts, is preferred

+ Familiarity with geospatial analysis tools such as GeoPandas or QGIS is preferred

+ Understanding of precision agriculture, irrigation systems, or agronomy preferred

+ Exposure to MLOps practices and deploying machine learning models in production environments is preferred

+ Experience with dashboarding and data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Plotly Dash preferred

+ Ability to work in the office 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
