Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
SUNY Geneseo is looking for a Trades Specialist (Electrician) to join our Facilities Department! In this role, you will perform journey-level electrician work and may supervise others in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and equipment.
You’ll be responsible for all electrical work, including the planning and laying out of work and the diagnosis of trouble in electrical systems or equipment in an assigned area, project, or facility. This will include repairs, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and equipment, including motors, transformers, wiring, switches, alarm systems, controls, and related equipment. To ensure continued safety, this position requires care and precision in its performance while following applicable electric code regulations.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. Coursework must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Preferred Qualifications
DEPARTMENT OPERATING NEEDS
+ Working knowledge of electrical theory and practice, mathematics, applicable standards and electicial code regulations as applied to the electrical trades, and knowledge of practices and techniques
+ Ability to read circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints, and generator and motor control diagrams
+ Ability to use the tools, equipment and materials of the electrical trade and the ability to train and supervise others
+ Ability to understand and follow instructions, read, write, and communicate
+ Possession of a valid NYS driver’s license
+ Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications

Function 1: Repair and Install Electrical Systems
+ Repairs, maintains and installs electrical systems and equipment including motors, transformers, wiring, switches, alarm systems, and related equipment
+ Repairs malfunctions by replacing burnt-out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, finding switch contact points, and cleaning or rewiring motors
+ Plans layout and wires new installations, consistent with specifications and electrical codes
+ Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels
+ Repairs mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electronic components of electrical equipment and controls using standard tools, gauges, and procedures
+ Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit
+ Locates and determines electrical malfunction using test instruments including a(n) ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope, and test lamp
+ Tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency using standard test equipment and by observing functioning
+ Makes adjustments to electrical equipment
