    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 22,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as its Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead. Established in 1959, the college offers a wide array of transfer-oriented associate degrees in various disciplines including the liberal arts and sciences; business; communications and the arts; computing and cybersecurity; and health sciences. Career-facing degrees and certificates are offered in allied health professions, automotive technology, culinary and baking, manufacturing, and many other areas. The college provides high school concurrent enrollment opportunities to thousands of students each year through both the Suffolk County Beacon program and through on-campus early college classes. Designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution, Suffolk enrolls thousands of students in English Language Learning courses, and also serves more service veterans and military-connected students than any other college in the SUNY system.

     

    SUNY Suffolk is searching for a full-time, 10-Month, Professional Assistant – Biology, Anatomy & Physiology – Ammerman Campus, for the Spring 2026 semester at the Ammerman Campus in Selden, NY.

     

    The Anatomy and Physiology Professional Assistant manages and coordinates the sections of Anatomy and Physiology I, in addition to other duties related to laboratory exercises, rooms, and all the associated laboratory classrooms and facilities. The successful candidate must be able to prep the full spectrum of Anatomy and Physiology and biology courses. The successful candidate should be familiar with both traditional and computer-based laboratory instruction. The position of Professional Assistant demands outstanding organizational skills and a thorough knowledge of the topics covered in the areas of Anatomy and Physiology laboratories. Recent experience in a science educational laboratory environment is desirable.

     

    The successful candidate will demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in laboratory preparation and maintenance, professional development and service. The successful candidate will also demonstrate openness to pedagogical innovation including the integration of new technologies and new laboratory learning opportunities into the lab curriculum.

    Job Description:

    + Supervise and coordinate the laboratory setup for the Anatomy and Physiology courses. This includes the preparation of the laboratory schedules for all sections, the coordination of day and evening classes and the supervision of all adjunct laboratory Professional Assistants.

    + Collaborate with Anatomy and Physiology instructors to design and plan the lab topic schedule and integrate all laboratory curricular changes for the academic year.

    + Coordinate with classroom faculty to promote “good lab practices” and a safe learning environment. Be familiar with the laws and regulations regarding educational biology laboratories.

    + Maintain laboratory equipment, anatomical models and other materials.

    + Prepare the Anatomy and Physiology yearly budget. Order, purchase, and maintain inventory of all supplies, specimens, equipment, service contracts, and other necessary items for the courses in this academic area.

    + Prepare and manage all complex solutions, stains, and reagents following recommended safety protocols for preparation, storage, usage and safe disposal.

    + Manage all specimens for these courses, including their purchase, maintenance, storage and safe disposal.

    + Manage all microscope slides in these classrooms by maintaining a semester inventory and prep-room slide database and ensuring quality control. Report to the departmental microscope slide curator.

    + Manage and maintain the inventory of all chemicals, glassware, laboratory supplies, educational supplies, laboratory equipment, models and microscopes. Maintain equipment in proper working condition.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a related field.

    + College-level educational laboratory experience or research lab experience.

    + Previous laboratory experience in anatomy and physiology is desirable.

    HIRING SALARY:

    This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.
