    Job Title: Senior Optics Technician

     

    Department: QED Optics

     

    Reports To: QED Optics Business Manager

     

    Grade: 9

    Summary

    Independently sets up, operates, and maintains conventional grinding, polishing and metrology equipment in support of precision optics manufacturing.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    Reviews customer drawing and produces and executes work instructions for customer jobs and/or process experiments.

     

    Independently develops, executes and documents conventional grinding and polishing processes for Plano, Spherical and Aspherical part geometries using traditional slurries, pads, pitch, etc.

     

    Designs, builds, or modifies tooling and fixtures used for grinding, polishing or measurement.

     

    Maintains polishing and metrology equipment in good, clean running condition, by performing recommended periodic maintenance, machine alignments, and troubleshooting activities

     

    Maintains polishing and metrology work areas in a clean, organized condition, compliant with all of QED’s EHS guidelines, so as to create an efficient work area that is suitable to “show off” to visiting customers at all times.

     

    Independently develops, executes and documents optical tests for Plano, Spherical and Aspherical part geometries using interferometry and/or other optical test methods

     

    Independently performs visual inspection of surfaces using inspection aids such as loupes and ISO-MIL light sources to identify, quantify and map surface imperfections.

     

    Determines part supply, maintenance tasks, safety procedures, and service schedule required to maintain machines and equipment in prescribed condition.

     

    Executes customer jobs, interacting with the customer as required and ensuring customer needs and technical specifications as defined are met.

     

    May be asked to learn and/or execute processes associated with and in support of MRF and other CNC-based processes.

     

    Education and/or Experience

     

    Associates Degree (A.S.) in Optics, Physics, or related field (or equivalent) preferred; or five + years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Other Skills and Abilities

     

    Extensive experience with manufacturing and/or testing precision optics to include mechanical and visual inspection and QC.

     

    Strong mechanical skills for installing, removing and aligning optics, tooling and other hardware on various polishing and metrology equipment.

     

    Hands on / working knowledge of conventional machining and equipment is required.

     

    Hands on / working knowledge of CNC grinding, polishing and MRF is desired.

    As requested trains and mentors co-workers, technicians and engineers in:

    + machine maintenance, set-up and operation

    + operation of various polishing equipment (spindles, MRF, etc)

    + interferometric testing and optical metrology techniques

     

    Computer Skills

     

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Spreadsheet, Presentation and Word Processing software.

    No certifications, licenses, or registrations are currently required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    None

     

    Travel

     

    Occasional travel (up to 10%) domestically and internationally, is currently required to perform the essential functions of this position.
