    Job Summary

    The position of Fire Inspector is position within the University of Michigan's Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Fire Safety department area. Under the direction of the University Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector is responsible for inspecting university facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, federal, university and insurance regulations, and other duties assigned.

    Responsibilities*

    + The Fire Safety Inspector will continue to build relationships across all university properties, working closely with internal and external stakeholders, to advance the fire and life safety for all students, staff, faculty and visitors to University properties.

    + Work as a liaison with the State Fire Marshal's Office on state-regulated buildings and projects.

    + Support and advise EHS department areas regarding fire safety issues.

    + Perform, document, distribute, and track annual building fire safety inspections for all assigned University owned facilities.

    + Follow-up to ensure that reported inspection deficiencies are being corrected.

    + Participates in Fire / Life Safety, regulating codes and compliance related committees, meetings, conferences, and seminars to improve knowledge and consult with experts and peers.

    + Conduct plan reviews of proposed new building and remodeling plans to ensure compliance with NFPA and other applicable codes.

    + Calculate occupant loads and capacities for assembly areas, conduct site inspections prior to special events, and review requests for the use of pyrotechnic devices, open flames, and ecological burns on university properties.

    + Assist in fire related incidents and identify fire prevention measures to prevent future incidents.

    + Perform fire extinguisher training as requested.

    + Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of Community Risk Reduction programs and training events across all University campuses.

    + Act as a liaison with local fire departments and coordinate preplanning for local emergency response and fire department training.

    + Participate in weekly on-call rotation for emergency fire safety response.

    + Conduct fire cause and origin and life safety investigations that include the collection and preserving evidence; interviewing those involved and preparing reports.

    + This position is required to support Stadium and special events, such as athletic events, dignitary visits, and other large mass gatherings as required.

    + Assist and support EHS administrative / business staff with open communication and other activities as needed.

    + Occasional travel is required to conduct duties of a Fire Safety Inspector or participate in meetings, workshops, conferences, boards or training.

    + Complete other duties as assigned by the University Fire Marshal or his / her designee.

    Required Qualifications*

    + A bachelor's degree in fire science, engineering, chemical sciences, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience are necessary.

    + NFPA Fire Inspector I certification with State of Michigan licensure as a Fire Inspector is required.

    + State of Michigan licensure as a Master Plumber and five (5) years of experience in the fire science and construction fields is desirable.

    + Recognized experience and demonstrated success working in a highly talented and complex organizational structure with a demonstrated commitment to fostering an ethical, inclusive, and collegial work environment.

    + Demonstrated strong inter-personal, de-escalation, and problem-solving skill sets.

    + Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and within a team environment.

    + Ability to perform inspections and prepare reports.

    + Knowledge of modern fire prevention principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.

    + Knowledge of, and experience in, the application and interpretation of fire codes and standards.

    + Knowledge of, and experience in, the application of codes involving life safety.

    + Knowledge and understanding of building codes related to fire and life safety.

    + Knowledge of and experience in construction methods and materials related to fire safety.

    + Must have effective time management skills and be able to work independently with little supervision as well as excellent organization and analytical skills to quickly advance work, deadlines, and projects under pressure.

    + Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

    + Moderate computer experience is necessary. Experience using Autodesk, Microsoft Suite, and Google Workspace is desirable.

    + Must be able to pass physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).

    + Must have a valid driver's license.
