Examples of work for this specific vacancy at the Transportation Generalist Level include but are not limited to:
Function: Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance
+ Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
+ Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
+ Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
+ Provide traffic control
+ Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Function:** **Snow and Ice
Performs Snow & Ice duties such as:
+ Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
+ Prepares and inspects winter equipment
+ Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
+ Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
+ Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
+ Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Class B Driver’s License and no air brake restriction. Must obtain a Tanker Endorsement prior to hire. Must obtain a Class A License within 6 months of hire.
Must obtain a Non-Commercial pesticide sprayer license within 6 months of hire.
**Exam Part 1:** The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
+ **Experience:** One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
OR
+ **Education:** Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.
+ Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
**Exam Part 2:** Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Acceptance of the bid is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you’ve previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist
IN assessing position qualifications, the appointing authority will consider whether the employee has discipline on file.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work nights; may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis. The employee will drive a motor vehicle in on & off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting). The employee will occasionally operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may need to infrequently move between 50 and 70pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.

This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver's License, submits to a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and is registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
