    IT Infrastructure Engineer Level 1 (3 vacancies)

    GENERAL DUTIES

    This position encompasses professional and responsible highly technical consultative and/or administrative work unique to the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and cloud deployments. Under administrative direction of a university IT manager, with broad latitude for independent action or decision, is responsible for the development of comprehensive infrastructure solutions. Engineer and operate mission critical infrastructure and be responsible for the access and protection of sensitive data, systems, and networks. May lead a team or participate in a team in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining datacenter and cloud operations that includes the management of IT facilities, network, security, telecommunications, servers, storage, and virtualization components.

     

    There are three Levels of this title. Assignment Levels 2 and 3 may oversee multiple projects and supervise employees. This specification describes typical assignments for this title; related duties may be assigned as needed.

    CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

    Queens College seeks an experienced and strategic Network Director/Lead Network Engineer to oversee the design, implementation, security, and ongoing management of the College’s network infrastructure. This position is both a strategic leadership role and a hands-on engineering role, ensuring that the College’s network meets the highest standards of reliability, scalability, and security.

     

    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Cisco and Ubiquiti network technologies and proven expertise in leading network projects, managing day-to-day operations, and supporting a large, diverse higher education environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership and Strategy

    + Develop and execute the College’s network strategy to support academic, administrative, and research initiatives.

    + Serve as the subject matter expert and point of escalation for all network-related matters.

    + Lead network planning, design, and implementation for campus-wide initiatives, including expansions, upgrades, and security enhancements.

    + Collaborate with senior leadership, academic departments, and administrative offices to ensure network services align with institutional goals.

    + Establish and enforce network policies, standards, and best practices for performance, security, and compliance.

    Network Engineering & Operations

    + Design, configure, implement, and maintain core, distribution, and access-level networking infrastructure using Cisco and Ubiquiti equipment.

    + Administer and optimize network systems, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, and access points.

    + Manage network security, including VLAN segmentation, ACLs, VPNs, and firewall rule management.

    + Conduct capacity planning and network performance analysis to ensure optimal uptime and service quality.

    + Monitor network performance using enterprise-grade tools, identifying and resolving issues proactively.

    + Oversee disaster recovery planning and implementation for network services.

    + Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical network incidents.

    Project and Team Management

    + Lead network-related projects from conception through deployment and support, including budgeting, vendor management, and resource allocation.

    + Work closely with ITS leadership and cross-functional teams on campus technology initiatives.

    + Serve as the technical lead for external contractors and managed service providers engaged in network projects.

    Documentation and Compliance

    + Maintain comprehensive network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and operational procedures.

    + As part of a cross-function team led by the CISO, ensure compliance with policies, state and federal regulations, and cybersecurity frameworks (working knowledge of NIST, FERPA, HIPAA, CMMC).

    + Prepare reports and recommendations for senior leadership on network performance, capacity, and strategic planning.

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.

    + 7+ years of progressive experience in network administration and engineering, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.

    + Hands-on experience with Cisco networking technologies, including routers, switches, and wireless infrastructure.

    + Experience with Ubiquiti UniFi systems and management platforms.

    + Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, BGP, OSPF, and VPN technologies.

    + Demonstrated experience implementing and managing network security best practices.

    + Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues across multi-vendor environments.

    + Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

    + Experience managing projects and leading cross-functional teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or related field.

    + Cisco certifications such as CCNP or CCIE.

    + Ubiquiti certifications, such as Ubiquiti Broadband Routing & Switching Specialist (UBRSS) or equivalent.

    + Experience working in a higher education or large enterprise environment.

    + Familiarity with cloud networking concepts and integration (AWS, Azure, etc.).

    + Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST 800-53 or ISO 27001.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1.** A baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university **and** five (5) years of satisfactory full-time experience in thedesign and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments; **or

    2.** A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university **and** six (6) years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in “1” above; **or

    3.** A high school diploma or its educational equivalent **and** ten (10) years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in “1” above; **or

    **4.** Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1," "2" or "3" above. The following may substitute for some of the required experience required in "1," "2" or "3" above, as follows:

    College education (undergraduate credits) may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required experience in "3" above on the following basis:

     
     
     

    **D.** 120 or more semester credits substitute for 4 years of experience.

    Graduate credits in information technology, computer science or a related field may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience in "1" or "2" above on the following basis:

     

    **B.** 30 or more graduate credits substitute for 2 years of required experience.

    **Q.** VMware Certified Professional (VCP) issued by VMware.

     

    However, all** **candidates must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least three (3) years of experience as described in “1” above.

    Assignment Level II or III

    **Level II:** After meeting the Qualification Requirements above, an additional two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience in thedesign and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments is required for Level II.

    **Level III:** After meeting the Qualification Requirements aboveandthe Level II requirements, an additional two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience in thedesign and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments is required for Level III (for a total of 4 years of experience above the Qualification Requirements).

    **English Language Proficiency** **:** Demonstrated English language proficiency, including ability to speak, read, write, and understand English well enough to meet minimally acceptable performance standards set for job duties.

    **Motor Vehicle Driver License** **:** A Motor Vehicle Driver license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

    **Note:** CUNY considers full-time work to be at least 35 hours per week. Part-time experience of at least 20 hours per week may be prorated by half and credited instead of,but not in addition to, full-time experience during the same period (e.g., two months of related work experience at 20-34 hours per week equates to one month of full-time related work experience.) Part-time experience of fewer than 20 hours per week **cannot** be credited at all.

    COMPENSATION

    Level I $105,827
