    The Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) (https://vetmed.tamu.edu/) is an institution that represents 100 years of growth from a small school of veterinary medicine in 1916 to its present role as a major veterinary educational, medical, and research center. Today, we are one of the largest schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, training nearly 600 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students each year.     The Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department is dedicated to the well-being and care of all its patients.     What we want

     

    The Equine Research Technician performs independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Provides overall management of the laboratory including supervision of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and other laboratory personnel, maintenance of equipment, oversight of inventory and ordering, and ensure compliance and integrity of research activities. Operates research equipment and conduct experiments pertaining to host-agent interactions. Assists with animal experiments, including procedures and care of animals, as well as compliance.

    Salary: Starting at $16.50/hour.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience

    + High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Two years of related professional experience to include experience with infectious diseases (preferably with zoonotic infections), research experience (preferably related to animal studies), laboratory experience, and experience with recording, curating, and analyzing research data.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + DVM or DVM-equivalent

    + Four years of related professional experience.

    + Leadership experience, specifically managing and training students and research personnel.

    + Experience participating in scientific conferences and preparing oral and poster presentations.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    + Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

    + Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff.

    + Excellent communication and presentation skills.

    + Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

    + Working knowledge of office software and instructional programs.

    + Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

    + Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.

    + Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

    + Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff, groups of various sizes.

    + Ability to work cooperatively with others.

    + Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, record, organize, and prepare data for statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks.

    + Organization skills to keep inventory and supplies updated, and laboratory decluttered.

    + Ability to delegate tasks and supervise students/staff.

    + Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.

    Responsibilities

    + Laboratory Operations: Designs, plans, conducts and coordinates experiments in support of various research projects. Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques of routine research; keeps detailed records of data. Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results. Summarizes results in scientific and clientele-oriented publications. Monitors expenditures and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints. Assists with compliance documentation. Reviews literature relating to possible procedures and experiments. Modifies procedures to suit the research need. Assists with planning and may supervise technical operations. Assists personnel involved in a series of controlled environment or analysis experiments. Assists in making chemical and physical analyses which, although they follow standard procedures and tests, may require the exercise of some ingenuity and improvisation.

    + Laboratory Personnel: Supervises and trains undergraduate students and other laboratory, technical, or field staff involved in research. Determines work priorities and assigns work accordingly. Embraces an environment of openness and respect among staff. Ensures that staff are afforded the opportunity to develop and grow. Promotes an environment that is respectful of others and promotes honest feedback and coaching of employees. Ensures that staff are properly trained to be successful. Ensures employees are appropriately evaluated and position descriptions are current.

    + Assistance with Experiments: Assists with animal experiments including, but not limited to, sample collection and supply organization as needed.
