    The Division of Pediatric Genetics within the Department of Pediatrics at UVA Children’s plays a critical role in ensuring early identification and management of genetic and metabolic disorders across Virginia. Our interdisciplinary team provides comprehensive, family-centered care for infants, children, and adolescents with genetic and metabolic conditions.

     

    The Division seeks to expand its team by adding a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who will partner closely with physicians and Genetic Counselors to improve access to care, strengthen statewide service coverage, and enhance the quality and timeliness of newborn screening interpretation.

     

    Shifts: Monday–Friday, primarily daytime hours; occasional flexibility required to support on-call coverage needs.

     

    Experience in pediatric or medical genetics, newborn screening interpretation, or metabolic disorders; demonstrated proficiency in family-centered counseling and interdisciplinary collaboration; strong analytical and communication skills; and prior experience in academic or tertiary care settings preferred.

    Administration

    + **Collaborates with physicians and Genetic Counselors to manage and track newborn screening results across UVA Children’s and affiliated hospitals statewide.**

    + **Participates in daily review and documentation of newborn screen interpretations, ensuring accurate communication with pediatricians and families.**

    + **Assists in coordinating multidisciplinary care for patients with confirmed or suspected genetic conditions, including documentation, referrals, and follow-up.**

    + **Supports ongoing data collection, quality improvement, and reporting requirements related to newborn screening and genetics service metrics.**

    Professional

    + **Functions as an integral member of the Pediatric Genetics team, maintaining compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations regarding genetic testing and newborn screening.**

    + **Demonstrates professional accountability through continuing education, participation in genetics-specific learning opportunities, and collaboration with genetic counselors and physicians.**

    + **Upholds UVA Health’s standards for compassionate, family-centered, and evidence-based care.**

    + **Contributes to the education of nursing staff, residents, and allied health professionals on genetics-related topics and newborn screening processes.**

    Clinical

    + **Provides direct patient care for pediatric genetics patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, with 16 patient-facing hours per week.**

    + **Performs comprehensive assessments, orders and interprets diagnostic tests, and develops individualized care plans under collaborative practice agreements.**

    + **Assists in the timely interpretation and triage of newborn screening results in coordination with the on-call Genetics physician.**

    + **Engages in patient and family education regarding genetic diagnoses, management plans, and coordination of specialty referrals.**

    + **Supports inpatient teams by consulting on hospitalized children with suspected or known genetic/metabolic disorders.**

    Leadership

    + **Serves as a clinical liaison between the Genetics Division and collaborating departments, community partners, and regional hospitals to ensure continuity and consistency of care.**

    + **Contributes to process improvement and innovation in newborn screening workflows to enhance efficiency, timeliness, and outcomes.**

    + **Participates in the orientation and mentorship of new staff and trainees within the division.**

    + **Demonstrates leadership in advancing UVA’s mission of statewide genetics care by modeling interdisciplinary collaboration and advocacy for early diagnosis and intervention.**

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.

     

    Experience: Department and unit specific.

     

    Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

     

    Position Compensation Range: $96,907.20 - $155,043.20 Annual
