    Overview

     

    As a Failure Analyst you will be responsible for conducting, coordinating and interpreting all required lab tests involved with performing failure analysis investigations as well as reverse engineering projects. This will include preparing and evaluating metallurgical samples and characterizing fracture surfaces using optical and scanning electron microscopy as well as evaluate and interpret results from other departments including chemical analysis and mechanical testing. This position will require you to work with our customers to provide them with quotes for projects and investigation results. In this role your focus will be delivering failure analysis results and feedback to our customers in an expeditious manner.

     

    Salary: $78,000.00 - $88,000.00/year DOE (Depending on Experience)

    Responsibilities

    • Meet with customers, prepare investigation plans and provide project quotations.

    • Examine and interpret fracture surfaces (SEM / EDS).

    • Interpret results from multiple types of materials tests (mechanical / chemical / Non-Destructive Testing).

    • Prepare and evaluate metallurgical samples (optical microscopy).

    • Prepare comprehensive technical reports.

    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Skills / Qualifications

     

    To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    Education and/or Experience

    • BS in Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering is required.

    • 2-4 years analyzing metallic fractures using scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy is preferred.

    • 3+ years of working knowledge of metallurgical laboratory equipment and practices. Hands on experience in the preparation and interpretation of metallurgical specimens is a must.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

    • Experience with field metallography, replication techniques a plus but not required.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, customer testing specifications, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and calculus.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions, data and details furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Physical Demands

    • Frequency of required physical force: Occasional (moderate).

    • Lifting requirements: lifting <20 lbs. often and > 40 lbs. sporadically.

    • Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically with the help of a coworker and/or lifting equipment.

    • Work is performed mainly in the metallurgical laboratory or failure analysis area.

    Other Skills and Abilities

    • Experience in interpreting testing procedures and requirements.

    • Availability, flexibility, and maturity to represent the company at a broad range of events/projects in the community, with customers and within the company.

    • Ability to remain calm when faced with mounting pressure related to deadlines and multiple priorities.

    • Well-developed oral and written communication skills to meet a variety of communication needs. Good interpersonal skills that foster open upward and downward communication built on mutual respect.
