    Description of Work Unit

    The Office of Engagement and Extension ( OEE ) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU’s engagement and outreach missions. OEE includes CSU Extension, Learning Innovation (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center, and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension ( VPEE ) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. OEE works collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus and has strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US, and globally. At any given time, OEE includes over 400 employees. The total budget is approximately $95 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE’s leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016, 2024) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Annually, Learning Innovation garners enrollments of over 15,000 learners and CSU Extension delivers approximately 500,000 educational contacts.

    Eagle County is a rural resort mountainous community on the western slope of Colorado. With a population of 55,731 (2020 Census Bureau) it is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 100 miles west of Denver. Most of the population resides in the Eagle River Valley; however the county also has population centers in the Roaring Fork Valley along Highway 82 which includes the residential communities of Basalt and El Jebel. Eagle County has an incredible geographic diversity covering over 1,694 square miles, 80 percent which is federally owned.     Position Summary

    OEE invites applications and nominations for a 4-H Youth Development Extension County Specialist. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month, non-tenure track Extension faculty position.Faculty rank (https://extension.colostate.edu/csu-extension-faculty/) is dependent upon the candidate’s academic credentials and professional experience and is subject to review by the Extension Promotion Committee. The faculty appointment, evaluation, and promotion standards are centered around the three core duties of extension faculty –educate, create, and connect (https://extension.colostate.edu/csu-extension-faculty/) . Candidates are sought with interests that complement and expand upon current initiatives and education activities in OEE and CSU Extension.

     

    Colorado State University Extension and Eagle County are seeking a youth development professional with a proven track record of effective communication, volunteer management, building program capacity, creating innovative programming, and fostering positive working relationships with both internal and external partners as well as others in the youth development community. The Extension County Specialist develops, promotes, delivers, and evaluates non-credit youth development programming within the Eagle County 4-H Program. The individual in this position is a member of the local county Extension team and a local representative of Colorado State University and Eagle County. The Specialist works as a member of the local Extension 4-H team and local organizations to provide inclusive and experientially rich programs in response to community needs in Eagle County. The Specialist is expected to employ broad outreach efforts to engage with and meet the needs of the county’s unique and varied communities.

     

    As a member of the Eagle County 4-H team, this individual has specific responsibilities for the club-based community program. Additionally, this individual is to engage Eagle County youth through additional 4-H delivery modes incorporating STEM and workforce skills into their 4-H programming. The Specialist oversees advisory committees that provide leadership, guidance, direction, and educational program support to the 4-H youth and volunteers in these project areas. This position also typically takes the lead organizing the county delegation for statewide camps and conferences including (chaperoning/arranging chaperons). They collaborate and partner with 4-H staff and the county director for overall leadership and direction of the 4-H club program which includes screening, training and managing volunteers.

     

    The office location for this position is in Eagle, Colorado. While this position is eligible for some hybrid work, the individual in this position is expected to maintain a presence in the office to effectively balance the duties of the position. The work schedule will vary, and occasional nights and weekend work will be necessary.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Completed bachelor’s degree. Conferred degree must be in education, agriculture, family and consumer sciences, youth development, leadership, social sciences, natural resources, science, non-profit management, or a closely related field that can significantly contribute to administrative and/or program responsibilities. Please note, to advance through the Extension Instructor faculty track, a completed master’s degree is required. For progression to the Extension Professor faculty track, a completed terminal degree is necessary. We encourage all successful candidates to work towards these qualifications to enhance their opportunities for advancement.

    + 2+ years professional experience relevant to the Essential Job Duties (below) of this position.

    + Course work and/or professional experience must provide a broad and significant understanding of youth development, education, and STEM and/or family and consumer sciences, agriculture, natural resources.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

    + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; Extension will not sponsor a visa for this position.

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Conferred master’s degree. Conferred degree may be in a variety of disciplines, including business, Extension education, youth development, agricultural sciences including animal science, social sciences, family and consumer sciences or related degree that can significantly contribute to administrative and/or program responsibilities.

    + Professional experience working with youth and youth-serving organizations, including an understanding of positive youth development and youth program management. Specific knowledge/experience in 4-H programming related to STEM , large animal and shooting sports projects.

    + Volunteer development, leadership and management experience including volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education and training, motivation, evaluation, recognition, and support to prepare volunteers to take on increasing leadership, management, and public education/information roles.

    + Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking, facilitation, presentation, and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.

    + Experience and/or certifications in managing conflict, mediating outcomes, and facilitating group discussion/decision making.

    + Successful experience developing financial support for educational programs: grant writing, fundraising, contracting, or cost recovery.

    + Ability to secure external funding in support of the land grant mission through pursuit of contract, foundation and grant funding, and/or evidence of development of fee-for-service programs.

    + Experience marketing, promoting, or creating public awareness of programs and opportunities including using social and mass media (e.g., TV, Internet, Facebook, newspaper, etc.).

    + Bilingual Spanish and English educator.
