Job Description
Are you passionate about transportation safety and data-driven planning? Join the Iowa Department of Transportation as aRail Safety Planner(Transportation Planner 1) and play a key role in advancing rail safety across the state.
As aRail Safety Planner, you will provide leadership and support for Iowa DOT’s rail safety initiatives. This includes implementing the State Rail Safety Action Plan, supporting GIS applications related to rail infrastructure, and preparing key planning documents. You’ll also respond to public inquiries about Iowa’s rail system and contribute data and analysis for federal funding applications and help guide our safety efforts. This position is integral to a variety of rail-related activities, including railroad grade crossing safety, track inspection data analysis, passenger rail planning and rail safety initiatives, and stakeholder coordination. This position will work closely with the Rail Director and a collaborative team of rail professionals to ensure Iowa’s rail transportation system is safe, efficient, and forward-looking.

*The office location is Ames, Iowa, and you may be required to report to the office as required.
Shift: Days, Monday through Friday. Flex schedule available. Some travel required, including overnight travel.
Rail Safety Planner (Transportation Planner 1) Desired Abilities:

Responsibilities of the position:
+ Analyze and develop rail safety strategies to increase the safety of the public related to railroads in Iowa.
+ Provide GIS development, data gathering, and data analysis.
+ Prepare and update key rail planning documents, while coordinating with other team members.
+ Respond to public inquiries about Iowa’s rail system.
+ Provide support for federal funding grants, applications, and administration.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation (technology, management, or flight operations), or transportation planning.
2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time work experience in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation (technology, management, or flight operations), or transportation planning equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work (as described in number one).
