    Position Summary: Family Support Workers are compassionate peer advocates who draw upon their own lived experience of raising, or having raised, a child with emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. Because of this personal understanding, they are uniquely equipped to build trust and connect with families navigating similar circumstances.

     

    In this role, Family Support Workers use their insight and firsthand knowledge of community resources, systems, and supports to empower families through education, advocacy, and emotional guidance. They collaborate closely with caregivers to strengthen family relationships, increase confidence in navigating services, and promote resilience within the household.

     

    Through one-on-one support, group activities, and community engagement, Family Support Workers help families develop the skills, stability, and connections needed to create safe, nurturing, and lasting home environments.

     

    Family Support Worker is a Community-Based Service.

    Operational Responsibilities

    + Help children function better at home and in the community by supporting family connection and stability.

    + Support caregivers in meeting their child’s emotional, physical, and parenting needs.

    + Teach families about local services and resources so they can make informed choices and access help when needed.

    + Encourage families to take an active role in planning their child’s care and treatment.

    + Work with families to improve their overall well-being and confidence in managing daily challenges.

    + Communicate and coordinate care with the family’s provider team to ensure everyone works together.

    + Help parents build advocacy skills and independence when working with service providers.

    + Understand and recognize common childhood mental health conditions.

    + Provide care that is respectful, family-driven, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and focused on strengths.

    + Collaborate closely with team members from Health Homes, CFTSS, and HCBS programs.

    + Complete progress notes in Avatar within 24 hours of visits or phone calls, connecting them to treatment or service goals.

    + Keep the scheduling calendar in Avatar updated with accurate appointment details.

    + Create and update FPSS and CFSS goals as part of treatment and service plans, ensuring they align with clinical recommendations.

    + Work with other providers to make sure FPSS and CFSS services are integrated into one cohesive plan.

    + Lead or co-facilitate parent support groups.

    + Complete the FANS Assessment with caregivers and use the results to guide service goals.

    + Follow all CFTSS and HCBS policies, regulations, and confidentiality requirements.

    + Stay organized with paperwork, deadlines, and documentation.

    + Report any suspected or known child abuse according to mandated reporting laws.

     

    Additional Responsibilities20. Schedule and track client sessions, maintaining at least 50% direct service time.21. Submit weekly schedules to your supervisor and report changes as they occur.22. Accurately record work hours in Paycom and track mileage for reimbursement.23. Attend all required trainings, meetings, and agency events.24. Participate in professional development opportunities, such as OMH and PEP trainings.25. Transport youth when needed using agency or personal vehicles, maintaining valid insurance.26. Follow all agency safety policies.27. Obtain and maintain the Family Peer Advocate Credential.28. Attend the annual Family Bonds Retreat Weekend.29. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications

    Some high school education (a high school diploma or G.E.D. is preferred); be at least 18 years of age; have experience working with children (preference given to those with experience working with children with special needs); be a parent or caregiver of a child with a history of emotional or behavioral problems (parent or caregiver is defined as a parent, foster parent or other family member with direct responsibility for the care of a child with a diagnosis of emotional disturbance).
