    Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled diagnostics, via advanced technology computer software (programs are specific to a system, no standard program and some are very complex) to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical/ electronic problems for the repair and maintenance work on engines and drive train, hydraulic and exhaust systems for a variety of equipment some of which work in a corrosive environment.

    Mechanic

    + Analyze, diagnose, repair and maintain light, medium and heavy equipment.

    + Perform skilled welding, fabrication, and repair of parts.

    + Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on equipment.

    + Maintain records of time, materials, supplies etc.

    + Use all required computers programs (i.e. TAMS).

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Ability to obtain Class A CDL driver’s license with no air brake restriction with tanker endorsement and

     

    Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certificate within 6 months of hire.

    + Approximately3 yearsofexperience asaheavy equipment mechanicwhich includes:diagnosis, repair, maintenance and modificationofbothheavy-duty dieseltrucks andequipmentand gasolinepowered vehicles;diagnosisand repairofengines,brakes, drive train, steering/suspension and hydraulics; use of electronics sufficient to make engine adjustments and diagnose problems; and the use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers sufficient to diagnose problems and adjust the functions of components.

    + Workingknowledge ofEnglish sufficienttoread,write, speakand understandoralandwritten information;communicatewithemployeesand the generalpublicin-person orviatwo-wayradioandotherelectronicdevices; and tomaintainroutine written logsandsimple records.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + **Licenses:** Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class “A”, with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement.

    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in a set area with tool carts, sinks, hoists and supplies easily accessible (i.e. the mechanics shop). The employee frequently uses gross and fine dexterity in a variety of positions including reaching outward and overhead, bending, working with outstretched arms and/or while lying on the back (i.e. on a creeper), climbing up onto a large vehicle, working from heights and bending over. The employee works with power tools, machinery/instruments and equipment, and hand tools requiring the frequent lifting and/or carrying/holding of supplies and parts up to 50 pounds. The employee will infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, or lifting and carrying. Working conditions include vision, noise, vibration, respiratory and chemical hazards and occasional adverse weather conditions (heat, cold snow rain, wind). Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking, and hearing. Communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, telephones, 2way radio, computer, etc.

    The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6-AM).

     

    The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
