    National Senior Medical Executive

    Role Summary

    The National Senior Medical Executive is a visionary physician leader responsible for driving clinical strategy, innovation, and client impact across the National Accounts Organization. This role serves as the senior-most clinical voice for large employer clients, delivering high-impact clinical analysis, strategic direction, and thought leadership. In addition to direct client engagement, the Senior Medical Executive leads a team of National Medical Executives, ensuring consistent, high-quality clinical support and strategic alignment across the enterprise.

     

    This position requires deep expertise in healthcare delivery, insurance, consulting, and health technology, with a proven track record of executive leadership in complex, matrixed environments. The ideal candidate brings a forward-thinking approach to employer health innovation, leveraging insights from clinical practice, industry trends, and enterprise capabilities to shape solutions that drive measurable outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities

    New Sales & Strategic Growth

    • Articulate Cigna’s differentiated value proposition in health advocacy, clinical programs, and network solutions during finalist meetings and consultant engagements.

    • Guide RFP responses by recommending innovative, client-specific strategies that reflect emerging healthcare trends and employer needs.

    • Represent clinical leadership in consultant roadshows and strategic forums, positioning Cigna as a market leader in employer health solutions.

    Client Engagement & Retention

    • Partner with National Account Executives (NAEs) to co-develop strategic clinical roadmaps that support retention, growth, and product adoption.

    • Analyze client-specific data to identify cost drivers, population health needs, and program performance, delivering actionable recommendations.

    • Serve as a clinical liaison between clients, account teams, and Clinical Operations to resolve complex issues and elevate the client experience.

    • Support clinical audits and contribute to the development of corrective action plans and strategic enhancements.

    Enterprise Leadership & Innovation

    • Lead the team of National Medical Executives, providing mentorship, strategic guidance, and performance oversight.

    • Translate enterprise innovations into actionable insights and training for account teams, ensuring consistent messaging and clinical excellence.

    • Represent the voice of the client and consultant community across internal forums, influencing Product, Informatics, Marketing, and Clinical Operations.

    • Assign strategic initiatives and special projects to team members based on enterprise priorities and client needs.

    Thought Leadership & Industry Expertise

    • Serve as a recognized clinical expert in national forums, delivering presentations and contributing to thought leadership on employer health innovation.

    • Stay ahead of industry trends, including digital health, value-based care, and population health management, to inform strategy and client engagement.

    • Build and maintain relationships with key consultants, health system executives, and technology partners to foster collaboration and innovation.

    Qualifications

    • Board-certified physician in an ABMS-approved specialty with an active, unrestricted medical license.

    • Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience.

    • At least 15 years of progressive leadership in medical management, including roles in insurance, consulting, health systems, or health technology companies.

    • Demonstrated success in leading teams, managing complex processes, and influencing enterprise strategy.

    • Exceptional communication, analytical, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills.

    • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, matrixed environment with a focus on results and innovation.

    • Willingness to travel extensively to support client and enterprise needs.

     

    If you will be working at home occasionally or permanently, the internet connection must be obtained through a cable broadband or fiber optic internet service provider with speeds of at least 10Mbps download/5Mbps upload.

     

    For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 255,000 - 425,000 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

     

    This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus and long term incentive plan.
