    Director of Student Disability Services

    POSITION DETAILS

    Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Students and serving on divisional leadership teams, the Director will be a change agent and visionary leader, with strong academic credentials and leadership ability in the field of disabilities. The incumbent is expected to have working knowledge of a full range of disabilities, advocate for the welfare of students with disabilities, coordinate appropriate academic accommodations and support services, as well as provide administrative leadership to the Office of Disability Services.

    The Director for Disability Services will perform the following job duties:

    + Manage the department’s budget and all personnel decisions, including working with vendors to provide appropriate accommodations and other outsourced services

    + Responsible for compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as they relate to student disability- related issues and maintain case files/confidential student records in line with FERPA and College/University protocol

    + Review and interpret disability documentation and determine appropriate academic accommodations on an individual basis

    + Serve as a resource and consultant with faculty, staff and student leaders on disability-related issues, legal responsibilities, disability awareness and best practices for creating an inclusive campus

    + Work closely with the Chief Diversity Officer/Title IX, Section 504, and ADA Coordinator to ensure compliance and that student disability concerns are addressed in a timely manner

    + Assist with recruitment and referral of eligible students into the CUNY LEADS program to facilitate successful academic and career outcomes

    + Collaborate with the campus community to identify and eliminate disability-related barriers for students and make recommendations for necessary changes and improvements to foster an inclusive environment

    + Lead and supervise a team of professional staff, ensuring effective delivery of services and resources

    + Develop and conduct campus-wide education, programming, and in-service training to increase awareness of relevant disability-related issues

    + Establish long- and short-range strategic planning, program goals, and operating procedures for the unit in alignment with those of the Division and College

    + Conduct annual program and service assessment and evaluation

    + Participate in national and regional conferences and maintain active membership, leadership and engagement in relevant professional organizations

    + Represent the division, campus, University on committees and at meetings, as required

    + Maintaining thorough knowledge of best practices, via active membership in such organizations as Association on Hight Education and Disability (AHEAD), New York State Disability Services Council (NYSDSC), of the issues pertaining to implementation of disability accommodations, ADA compliance and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

    + Knowledge of case law, court rulings, current practices and trends/developments in the field of student disability services in post-secondary education

    + Lead a section of the First-Year Seminar

    QUALIFICATIONS

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    + Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Master’s preferred in counseling, rehabilitation, social work, or related field.

    + Minimum of five (5) years full-time professional experience at the Associate/Assistant Director level working with students with disabilities in College or University setting

    + Demonstrated management experience with budget oversight, personnel supervision, and program development, along with excellent oral and written communication skills.

    CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

    Provides administrative oversight, visionary leadership and broad direction for all aspects of a unit supporting students with special needs.

     

    - Develops a comprehensive program serving students with disabilities to ensure their retention and academic success

     

    - Serves as the primary resource related to campus student disability issues and works collaboratively to identify, facilitate, and implement a vast array of student support services

     

    - Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies

     

    - Manages program and administrative support staff, including professionals such as Sign Language Interpreters and Disability Accommodations specialists

     

    - Prepares long- and short- range plans and budgets, and monitors and reports performance related to goals

     

    - Develops and implements program assessment plan to evaluate program delivery of services, student learning outcomes, and student satisfaction

     

    - Generates campus-wide programming for students with disabilities and to increase sensitivity throughout the college community

     

    - May manage other student affairs programs serving a variety of student communities

     

    - Performs related duties as assigned.
