Position Profile
The **Senior Engineer, Clinical** interacts with physician customers, biomedical engineers, and the clinical applications team in the fulfillment of 3D printed patient-specific applications. Primary responsibilities include operating a point-of-care 3D printing lab—from DICOM segmentation, STL file optimization, 3D printing, and quality assurance, to final model delivery. The role also serves as a champion for expanding lab usage.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Segment DICOM datasets (CT/MRI) to produce patient-specific anatomical models, bolus, surgical guides, implants, etc.
Prepare files for printing, including orientation and support generation.
Collaborate with biomedical engineering and clinical applications teams to ensure timely and high-quality fulfillment of physician orders.
Utilize and maintain 3D printers, 3D CAD software, additive manufacturing machines, and related tools.
Perform daily production workflow tasks including manufacturing, finishing, quality checks, packaging, and shipping.
Maximize print performance and quality through effective scheduling and software tools.
Maintain optimal equipment performance through preventative maintenance, repairs, and calibration.
Handle shipping and receiving of materials and finished products.
Track inventory of consumables per company guidelines.
Coordinate with OEM/external repair partners or Ricoh service teams.
Maintain accurate records and documentation.
Develop and maintain relationships with coworkers, vendors, and partners.
Ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule.
Add new customer accounts and assist with onboarding to the Ricoh 3D case management portal.
Complete quality reports and other required documentation.
Ensure compliance with regulatory and production requirements, escalating concerns as needed.
Monitor equipment and production usage using logs and administrative tools.
Support site expansion through model utilization awareness and customer education.
Investigate production or quality issues in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Identify and disposition nonconforming products in coordination with the Quality team.
Perform inspections per workflow (incoming, in-process, final QC); maintain inspection records.
Execute all quality assurance processes and uphold standards.
Assist regulatory teams by preparing requested data and drafting internal responses.
Support sales by engaging with hospital staff through tours, demos, and educational sessions.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Certifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering preferred, or equivalent experience in the medical additive manufacturing industry.
Certificate or degree in a 3D printing-related field strongly preferred.
1–3 years’ experience with polymer 3D printers preferred.
Experience with 3D scanners and scanning software is a plus.
CAD experience required, including modifying existing CAD files.
Experience in a QMS or FDA-regulated environment preferred.
Familiarity with industry workflow and automation systems preferred.
Knowledge of standards such as ISO 9000, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, and 21 CFR preferred.
Proficiency in standard business software.
Background in anatomy, biology, or radiology strongly preferred.
Proven experience with DICOM segmentation of CT and MRI datasets required.
Customer service experience preferred.
Packaging and shipping operations experience a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of human anatomy and clinical/surgical procedures.
Knowledge of image acquisition, translation, and validation for 3D printing.
Engineering design skills including material selection, simulation, modeling, and customer requirement translation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to understand technical documentation.
Strong customer service skills; responsive and proactive with client communications.
Self-starter who works well independently and manages a variety of tasks efficiently.
Skilled in handling, cleaning, and polishing both delicate and robust 3D printed parts.
Familiarity with post-processing tools and techniques:
Vapor smoothing (IPA, acetone, etc.)
Support removal and cleanup
Hand tools and sanding
Vibratory/ultrasonic cleaning
Adaptable to changing work environments and responsibilities.
Highly motivated and effective under multiple concurrent assignments.
Creative problem-solver for complex quality and process issues.
Relationship builder with internal and external stakeholders.
Highly organized and time-efficient.
Comfortable in performance-driven environments.
Strong analytical and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
Must be able to multi-task, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and have a strong work ethic.
Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Demands
Work is conducted in a mix of office and manufacturing environments.
Requires delicate handling of printed parts.
Frequent communication with biomedical engineering, clinical applications, production, and quality teams.
Minor physical demands: standing, sitting, walking for extended periods.
Requires moderate manual dexterity (keyboard, tools, etc.).
Occasional overtime and/or on-call may be required.
Occasional travel may be necessary.
