Department Summary:
MITRE is dedicated to solving problems that provide safety, security, and economic prosperity for American businesses and all individuals. The Center for Enterprise Modernization (CGEM) Commerce Division is a rapidly growing division, focused on driving mission impact for the U.S. Department of Commerce. We are seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals with diverse skillsets who are interested in contributing to our mission-focused work of building a strong, resilient economy.
MITRE is seeking an experienced Sensors Engineer to work in our Oceans and Atmosphere Department in the Commerce Division and support our work program with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS). This position requires a blend of radar and sensors technology, meteorology, weather forecasting applications, software engineering, and hardware maintenance experience.
Roles & Responsibilities:
As a Systems Engineer, you will play an important role in advancing the mission and impact of the Commerce Division’s Oceans and Atmosphere Department, driving innovation and excellence in support of our sponsor’s most critical challenges. You will help execute the department’s strategy, contributing to quality, professional prominence, and meaningful impact.
Key responsibilities and expected outcomes:
+ Systems Engineering: Provide systems engineering and analyses across the program lifecycle, including capabilities and requirements development, analysis of alternatives, concept of operations (CONOPS), deployment strategies, and system migration planning and transition activities.
+ Technical Expertise: Offer deep technical recommendations across radar systems technology, software engineering, hardware maintenance, and data management. Contribute expertise to interdisciplinary teams in developing solutions that advance the state of science and technology.
+ Market & Technology Research: Conduct radar systems technical and market research, identifying opportunities for new technologies to save lives, livelihoods, and lifestyles, and to restore U.S. leadership in global capabilities.
+ Innovation & Technical Excellence: Contribute to the evaluation and integration of advanced practices, methodologies, tools, and techniques. Identify and recommend cutting-edge technical solutions that deliver faster, more cost-effective results.
+ Sponsor Engagement: Serve as a trusted advisor to our sponsors. You will represent the project team professionally, build and maintain strong relationships, and help sponsors navigate complex technical challenges.
+ High-Impact Communication: Create and deliver compelling presentations that translate complex technical findings into actionable insights for stakeholders and leadership, enabling informed strategic decisions.
+ Team Building: Foster collaboration across diverse teams of scientists, engineers, and stakeholders, contributing to a culture of excellence and innovation.
+ Strategic Impact: Serve as a thought leader that will help influence the future work program. Drive improvements in quality and operational efficiency that position our organization as a leader in the field.
Basic Qualifications:
+ Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
+ At least 5 years of experience working in the public sector (government or contractor)
+ Extensive experience with system development lifecycles, requirements analysis, systems integration, and deployment
+ In-depth knowledge of radar engineering, meteorology, and weather forecasting applications
+ Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills
+ Proven ability to translate technical concepts for leadership and non-technical audiences
+ This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Advanced expertise in software engineering, radar hardware and communication standards, and data integration and management
+ Demonstrated experience working with NOAA and in fields related to their missions (weather, environmental science, oceanography, space, satellite and radar engineering, aerospace engineering)
+ Experience collaborating with diverse teams and fostering interdisciplinary innovation
+ Passion for excellence and a track record of leading and delivering high-quality, impactful solutions
+ Ability to work full-time at the NOAA sponsor site in Norman, Oklahoma
