Department Summary:
The MITRE Corporation is seeking a highly qualified and engaged candidate for an Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Senior to join our team. The MITRE Physical Security and Safety Department ensures a safe, secure, and compliant work environment across all MITRE facilities. We partner with internal stakeholders to promote a culture of safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship across labs, offices, and shared spaces.
Job Description: Roles and Responsibilities:
+ Assist in implementing and monitoring EH&S policies and procedures in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
+ Conduct routine safety inspections of laboratories, office spaces, and common areas.
+ Manage and track participation in medical surveillance programs (e.g., crane operation, respirator use, laser safety, dive medicals).
+ Coordinate with external medical vendors and ensure regulatory medical evaluations and fit testing are completed.
+ Maintain accurate EH&S records, including training logs, inspections, compliance documentation, and medical surveillance tracking.
+ Support incident investigations and help develop and track corrective actions.
+ Inspect and maintain emergency equipment such as AED’s and medical and mobility equipment.
+ Facilitate the proper record keeping of safety incidents in accordance with applicable regulations (i.e. OSHA 1904.7).
+ Assist with chemical inventory management and hazardous waste disposal, including medical waste.
+ Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and administrative staff to promote a culture of safety.
+ Facilitate EH&S education and training programs
+ Track, analyze, and report EH&S performance metrics and trends.
Basic Qualifications:
+ Typically requires a minimum of 3 years of related experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent in education, or 2 years’ experience and an Associate degree, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
+ Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable EH&S regulations.
+ Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
+ Basic p roficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
+ Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and the ability to work independently.
+ Friendly and professional demeanor.
+ Ability to provide quality customer service.
+ Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.
+ Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
+ This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field
+ Experience managing or supporting medical surveillance programs (respiratory, DOT, laser safety).
+ Internship or academic experience in EH&S or laboratory safety.
+ Experience supporting safety programs in classified or government facilities.
+ Familiarity with Virginia DEQ (VADEQ) and other regional EH&S regulations.
+ Professional certifications such as ASP, CSP, CHMM, or OSHA 30-hour training.
+ Experience with chemical inventory systems and hazardous waste tracking.
