Duties Description Under the supervision of the Trades Supervisor (Electrician) or higher-level personnel, the Trades Specialist (Electrician) may be engaged in the performance of the following activities:• Plan and lay out electrical work, wire new installations.• Repair, maintain and install electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, switches and wiring, alarm systems, traffic signals and related equipment and public address systems.• Locate and diagnose electrical malfunction using test instruments such as ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter, and test lamp.• Test generators and heaters for safety and efficiency using standard test equipment and by observing functioning of such equipment.• Install fixtures, motors, and other electrical equipment; make necessary adjustments during/after installation.• Inspect and test circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repair or rewire system according to building codes and safety regulations.• Maintain shop machinery, equipment, and electrical tools and make sure work areas and equipment are clean, safe, and properly serviced.• May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to accomplish work projects.• Supervise, direct, and coordinate sub-journey level workers involved in installation, maintenance, or repair of various types of electrical equipment, motors, pumps generators, etc.• Conduct inspections of facilities to determine maintenance needs and make recommendations of priorities for repair.• Operate light trucks, aerial bucket truck and other motor vehicles required to get to various facilities in the performance of duties assigned.• Prepare sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment and interpret and follow diagrams or blueprints of electrical installations.• Test, adjust, calibrate, and maintain a wide variety of control equipment including central heating plant controls, building heating, air conditioning and ventilating equipment, controls for refrigeration and a variety of other equipment and systems.• Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit.• Assist with the ordering of supplies for projects.• Set up and operate large TV monitors, PA systems, sound systems, and other AV equipment, as well as perform breakdown and removal of system setup as needed. • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience** in the electrical trade under a skilledtradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training,apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience andtraining gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school,institute, or branch of the Armed Services;OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours ofblueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with anaverage of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship alsoincludes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. **If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.• Must be able to operate a bucket truck and work at heights off both ladders and bucket trucks. • Ability to dig in the ground to expose underground electric lines.• Must possess or obtain a valid CDL Class B with air brakes Driver License*** within the probationary period that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State and maintain it as a term of condition and employment.*** Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive.
