EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Master’s degree (either the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree must be in nursing).
+ Current experience in a progressive academic medical center or large complex system with a minimum of five (5) years of informatics or data/analytics experience.
+ Prior experience in clinical nursing practice and / or management.
+ Clinical and administrative systems implementation and project management experience. **Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Master’s degree in nursing informatics
+ Quality and change management experience
+ Large-scale project implementation experience
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
+ Registered Nurse with a current license to practice professional nursing in Texas.
+ Board certified in nursing informatics
JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Director, Nursing Informatics integrates clinical science, computer science, and information science to manage andcommunicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing and health professions practice. Supports Nursing Service and the health professions through effective design and use of informatics solutions and/or technology including, but not limited to, clinical systems used for direct provision of care, administrative systems, and nursing research. Serves as a catalyst for driving the nursing informatics strategic plans that include large-scale technology projects for UTMB. Serves as a colleague and mentor, developing confidence and capturing the spirit of nursing staff and managers to achieve a dynamic and positive environment supportive to the practice of nursing. Supports Nursing Informatics
practice within UTMB Nursing Service by delivering educational experiences and supporting life-long learning.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
+ Leads or participates in a variety of project teams that include clinical staff and Information Services analysts / application development staff in the design, selection, development, implementation, evaluation, and optimization of information systems, and state-of-the art, easyto-use information tools as a means of supporting clinical practice, research, and education for the UTMB Hospitals and Clinics. Manages aspects of projects that relate to business and clinical functional requirements, detailed software requirements, clinical knowledge integration, and consultation for application development.
+ Participates in the development and implementation of a vision of how technology in the broadest sense can support professional nursing practice and how nursing can capture data in the patient’s record that describe nursing’s impact on the patient and patient outcomes.
+ Integrates ergonomics and human-computer interaction principles into informatics solution design, development, selection, implementation, evaluation, and optimization.
+ Integrates knowledge of current professional practice standards, laws, and regulations into informatics practice.
+ Develops and/or participates in and disseminates standards pertaining to information systems that support the documentation of nursing and health professions practice.
+ Implements processes to evaluate the impact of technology on nursing practice and patient outcomes; providing suggestions for optimization, improvement, and/or innovation in technologies.
+ Remains abreast of advances in the areas of healthcare technology and information management systems and anticipates their effect on and translation into nursing practice.
+ Participates in the development and implementation of standardized (clinical) data to support performance improvement, research, education, patient experience, and prevention of clinical risk and harm.
+ Develops and maintains productive and collaborative relationships with physicians, hospital administrators, Information Services leadership, and UTMB School of Nursing to enhance the development of the practice of Nursing Informatics and the improvement and innovation of the application of technology within the practice of Nursing.
+ Provides system analysis, interpretation, and consultation to others.
+ Identifies and recommends fiscal, material, and human resource requirements for informatics projects.
+ Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
+ Leads Business Continuity Planning for Nursing relative to Information Systems downtime.
+ Chairs the Nursing Informatics Council and serves as the administrative liaison.
+ Acts as a point of contact for application control and change requests.
+ Serves as a resource for the CNIO.
+ Serves as a partner to the Nursing Informatics Program Manager to ensure all major projects are operationalized with nurses, for nurses.
+ Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
+ Working knowledge of HIPAA, CMS, TJC, federal and state regulations that relate to electronic health records, including information systems security and technical requirements that are necessary for compliance with these laws and regulations.
+ Demonstrated ability to leverage healthcare information systems not only for technological advancement but to drive meaningful improvements in clinical workflows, patient care delivery, and process redesign.
+ Advanced knowledge of organizational development, systems and change theories and statistics.
+ Ability to shape and implement a vision for seamless data collection and nursing documentation.
+ An ability to work independently and within interdisciplinary teams to make effective decisions.
+ Strong leadership and management skills.
+ A passion for excellence which elevates the abilities and competencies of the various patient care providers.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills, as confirmed by the ability to develop effective relationships with a broad array of people at various levels within as well as external to the organization.
Salary Range:
