    Job Description

    The Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab and the Patton Center for Deer Research at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute (CKWRI) & Texas A&M University Kingsville has started the South Texas Lion Project, which focuses on mountain lion population status and movement ecology in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands region. The Program Manager for this project will, under direction, assist in the planning, organizing, and management of day-to-day activities of the South Texas Lion Project, developing and implementing procedures to meet project’s objectives . Job will run from January – April 2026. Will work remotely at a privately-owned ranch in Dimmit and Maverick Counties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    + Works with SPEC lab members to plan, organize, and direct day-to-day field activities.

    + Supervises field technicians and student assistants.

    + Manages a database of carnivore data from camera traps, GPS collars, and genetic samples.

    + Assists PI and graduate students in developing strategic plans and goals to support the program’s capture and camera trapping efforts.

    + Assists with the development and production of materials designed for the program.

    + Researches , develops, and writes papers, grant applications and prepares presentations.

    + Maintains and develops communications among partners by attending meetings and conference calls.

    + Keeps inventory of equipment

    + Maintains camera grids and performs tracking of mountain lions in the field.

    Additional Responsibilities

    + There will be frequent opportunities to assist with carnivore fieldwork in South Texas

    + This position requires that the successful applicant maintain a high level of physical fitness with the ability to safely complete long hikes, often off trail and sometimes on rugged terrain, in hot and dry conditions.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education – Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Experience – Five years of related experience.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

     

    Knowledge of – Knowledge of different trapping strategies used for carnivores. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

     

    Ability to – Ability to multitask, lead a field team, and work cooperatively with others.

     

    Skills in – Skills in excellent verbal and written communication skills.

     

    Prefer at least 5 years of experience maintaining remote camera trap grids and 5 years of experience capturing and collaring mountain lions

     

    Supervision Received/Given

     

    This position is supervised by the SPEC Lab and Patton Center for Deer Research PIs but also supervises field technicians and undergraduate student assistants.
