General Summary:
We are looking for a Mainframe Developer to build and support the core systems that keep our business running. You’ll work with COBOL, JCL, IMS, DB2, and related tools to design, enhance, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performing applications. As part of an Agile team, you’ll collaborate with technical leads and cross-functional partners to deliver solutions that drive business value and improve the customer experience.
What You Bring:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
+ 6+ years of software development experience, ideally in a Scrum/Agile environment
+ 7+ years of hands-on mainframe development experience
+ Strong skills in COBOL, JCL, IMS, DB2, VSAM, and TSO/ISPF
+ Experience with source control tools (SCLM, Endeavor, Changeman, Git)
+ Familiarity with debugging tools (Abend-AID, Expeditor, File-AID, DumpMaster, Insync, TraceMaster). BTS is a plus
+ Solid understanding of SDLC and test-driven development
+ Strong problem-solving skills and attention to downstream impacts
+ Excellent communication and collaboration skills
+ Passion for delivering high-quality solutions that delight customers
What You’ll Do:
+ Design, build, and maintain critical mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and IMS
+ Lead development efforts and mentor junior engineers
+ Collaborate with analysts, testers, and cross-functional teams to turn business needs into scalable solutions
+ Optimize programs for performance and reliability
+ Participate in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting across environments
+ Ensure solutions meet architecture standards and are secure, scalable, and maintainable
+ Support deployments and upgrades in partnership with DevOps and infrastructure teams
+ Stay current with third-party and cloud technologies, and help evaluate buy vs. build decisions
+ Contribute to Agile ceremonies, backlog grooming, and sprint planning
+ Help shape coding standards, tools, and processes with architects and principal engineers
+ Actively mentor team members and foster a culture of continuous improvement
+ Focus on delivering business value and improving the customer experience
+ Lead the design and implementation of new features and enhancements across the application portfolio
+ Ensure technical solutions meet performance, fault tolerance, and scalability standards
+ Collaborate with architects and principal engineers on frameworks, tooling, and coding practices
+ Participate in sizing, estimation, and sprint planning activities
+ Maintain technical documentation and ensure compliance with standards
+ Evaluate the impacts of new product releases and coordinate implementation
+ Work closely with UX designers, business analysts, and test engineers to ensure smooth delivery
+ Contribute to innovation by suggesting process and technology improvements
+ Support production stability and performance in collaboration with support teams
+ Think with the end customer in mind, always aiming to improve their experience

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$89,400.00-$183,500.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
