Position Summary
The Morehouse School of Medicine Office of Marketing and Communications is seeking an experienced and dynamic Media Relations and Public Relations Manager with a specialized focus on research. This role is designed to propel our research initiatives and publications across a broad spectrum of media channels. The ideal candidate will be proactive in crafting and executing strategies to ensure our scientific innovations receive deserved media prominence while adhering to national best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
-Develop and lead comprehensive media relations strategies centered on research excellence.
-Contribute to the development and execution of strategies for research communications projects and new initiatives, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
-Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, journals, and influencers within the scientific communities.
-Write and edit content for various communication vehicles and audiences, including the website, intranet, news releases, and print publications.
-Collaborate closely with research teams to translate complex scientific findings into compelling narratives. Conduct interviews with researchers as needed.
-Utilize appropriate writing styles and communication techniques to ensure accuracy and effective messaging, adherence to MSM brand compliance and style guidelines.
-Drive proactive media outreach, securing coverage in top-tier, trade, and niche media platforms, ensuring content is relevant, timely, and supportive of strategic goals.
-Research and write a variety of reports for unique audiences, such as requests from funders, demonstrating research impact and results.
-Identify appropriate research, prepare content, and manage required approvals for submissions to communication campaigns.
-Maintain an up-to-date collection of print and digital research communication materialsincluding time-sensitive collateral and presentations.
-Work collaboratively with Creative Services to update and develop new print and digital communications, including reports, brochures, posters, e-invitations, and graphics.
-Support the development of speeches and prepare speaking/briefing notes for organizational leaders.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, Creative Writing, Scientific Field, or related discipline.
- A minimum of five years of experience in media relations, public relations, scientific communications, or related roles.
- Previous experience working within an academic medical institution, medical school, pharmaceutical, or scientific industry.
- Proven track record of successful media placements and strong media relationships.
- Exceptional writing and editorial skills with a keen understanding of diverse writing styles and techniques.
- Strong strategic thinking, planning, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
- Proficiency in media monitoring and PR analytics tools.
Experience:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Familiarity with scientific publishing processes and journalistic inquiry.
- Certification in public relations (such as APR ).

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are encouraged to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment.
