POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Houston Public Works Department (HPW) is the largest and most diverse public works organization in the country. The department is responsible for streets, drainage, producing and distributing water, collecting and treating wastewater, and permitting and regulation of construction. Accredited by the American Public Works Association, our over 4,000 dedicated public servants work together to create a strong foundation for Houston to thrive.
Within the Department, the Houston Permitting Center Service Line (HPC) administers & enforces over 400 permit types for the City of Houston and its jurisdictions, annually reviews over 65 thousand commercial & residential plans, and manages over $80M in revenue and expenditures, respectively, related to permitting & regulatory operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
HPC is seeking a Senior Customer Service Cashier who is self-motivated, customer service and detailed oriented. Primary responsibilities are assisting customers with general questions regarding permits, license renewals and processing payments in the cashiering permitting system. This position will also support the mail areas.

+ Acts as a team leader in assisting supervisor in preparing work assignments, provide training on policies and procedures.
+ Handles complex customer accounts and/or complaints.
+ Responsible for the pickup of Houston Permitting Center’s incoming mail from USPS. Researches and distributes mail and payments to cashiers for processing.
+ Reconciles all cash and checks to summary reports for daily deposits.

+ Maintain clear and consistent oral and written communications with customers, cashiers and supervisor.
+ Participates, facilitates, and interprets for management operating results that include, but are not limited to, goals, cost reduction efforts, department initiatives and other identified opportunities for improvement.

+ Researches, analyzes and assists customers with sales order discrepancies and payment issues with HouPermits, INFOR and ILMS.
+ Recommends and implements improvement opportunities to immediate supervisor.
+ Balances daily money collections on cashiering system.

+ Provides guidance to the customer service cashiers and other external and internal customers.

+ Performs cashiering task during staffing shortages and breaks.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has supervisory duties and will act as a team leader.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position is physically comfortable. The office environment is physically comfortable and has no major sources of discomfort. The individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are occasional periods of stooping, bending, and being able to lift 40 pounds.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of money handling experience are required.

PREFERENCES
Preferences will be given to applicants who possess a working proficiency with ILMS (Integrated Land Management System), INFOR/HouPermits and iNovah software. Preference shall be given to candidates who demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications, such as MS Word and MS Excel.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
