    Job Summary

    Nuclear Instrument Technician I/II/III

     

    Works under direction of a Supervisor or Senior Technician and performs maintenance and calibration activities. Performs work activities in both a shop and field environment to include normal and radiological areas of the plant. Work activities are related to maintenance, calibration and testing of safety-related equipment associated with electrical, mechanical and instrumentation and control systems. Satisfactorily completes the Instrument and Control Technician Training program. Assists with scheduled work activities such as preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, and calibrations. Works on both analog and digital control systems including microprocessor, electronic, and pneumatic instrumentation and controls including pressure, temperature, and flow sensors and associated alarm circuits. Corrects anomalous operations of indicators, controllers and instrument loops using more advanced test equipment and investigative techniques. Accurately completes documentation associated with assigned job tasks and complies with approved procedures.Complies with and demonstrates a working knowledge of Work Management processes, Equipment Clearances (safety tagging), Radiological Work permits associated with department maintenance work assignments and Safety regulations, policies, and practices. Assists Technicians with performing maintenance, calibrations, and testing of equipment and control loops on systems and equipment, including the reactor containment and other radiological areas, during all modes of plant operation. Uses industry accepted human performance practices to promote error free performance and coaches others to raise standards and expectations. Satisfactorily completes the initial training requirements and on-the-job training and evaluation requirements identified in the Nuclear Instrument Technician Training Program as accredited by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

    Nuclear Instrument Technician Specialist

    A Nuclear Instrument Technician Specialist is a leader in the department. Performs testing, calibrations, and repairs of protection and control loops, is responsible for the crew work management activities to include having crew Technicians perform work order validations, parts retrieval, requesting tagging boundaries, coordinating work with the Work Week Coordinator and Operations, performing review of completed documentation prior to Supervision review and assisting supervision with operational risk evaluation. The Nuclear Instrument Technician Specialist coordinates and performs surveillance testing to satisfy Technical Specification requirements. This role is essential in complex and high risk troubleshooting activities as individuals in this position have a high level of technical knowledge and are considered the Subject Matter Expert on various systems and components. The Nuclear Instrument Technician Specialist will support the Instrument Training Instructors in developing and delivering training material. Other responsibilities include: Recommending procedure updates and improvements and acting as procedure reviewer; Coordinating and performing troubleshooting to resolve equipment deficiencies; Performing On-the-Job training with Trainees and conducting Task Evaluations with Trainees to qualify Nuclear Instrument Technicians (I, II, III); Acting as lead Technician executing Accident Mitigation Team strategies, if necessary, during a plant emergency; Providing input to Engineering on plant improvement initiatives and problem resolution. Assuming point of contact role with Vendors and Contractors; Demonstrating good communication skills with personnel and management in clear and concise terms.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

     

    Nuclear Instrument Tech I, II, III

     

    Must possess 1 year or more of related experience.

     

    Commercial nuclear power experience & Nuclear Navy (ET or EM) experience preferred.

     

    Successful completion of the Instrument and Control Technician qualification test.

     

    Demonstrated working knowledge of electronic equipment and circuitry.

     

    Demonstrated familiarity with the general theories of instrumentation and control and their methods of application in nuclear power stations.

     

    Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot analog and digital instrumentation and control circuits.

     

    Demonstrated general familiarity of electrical and mechanical physical/dimensional measurements.

     

    Demonstrated ability to interpret a range of general diagrams, prints, and written procedural instructions and to perform work using the information.

     

    Satisfactorily completes the required initial training and on-the-job training and evaluation processes in order to proceed in line of progression as identified in the Nuclear Instrument Technician Training Program as accredited by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

     

    Must be physically able and willing to utilize respirators, SCBA bottles, fall protection or other equipment essential to the requirements of maintaining a Nuclear Power Plant including making containment entries.

     

    Must be able to and willing to work at varying elevations, confined quarters and radiological areas of the plant.

     

    Must have the physical ability to carry a minimum of 50 pounds tooling, test equipment, and plant equipment.

     

    Nuclear Instrument Tech II

     

    Successfully completed the Navy Nuclear Propulsion training program and possess a minimum of 6 years of experience (hands on experience in the field/fleet) in the following discipline: Nuclear Electronics Technician (ET) / Nuclear Electricians Mate (EMN) OR

     

    Possess 6 years or more industrial experience in a directly related field (ex. Instrument & Controls, electronics, etc.) Military electronic experience in any Armed Force Services is preferred

     

    Nuclear Instrument Tech III

     

    Must have at least 5 years of experience working in I&C, of which at least 1 year must be nuclear experience.

     

    Has successfully completed Step 3 of the I&C Development Program

     

    Nuclear Instrument Tech Specialist

     

    Must have at least 8 years of experience working in I&C;

     

    Completion of all qualifications in the accredited Nuclear Instrument Technician Development Program and is fully qualified on all protection and control systems for the reactor plant and steam plant, including the auxiliary support systems, controls and indications;

     

    Demonstrated detailed knowledge of plant policies and practices. In addition, has consistently demonstrated leadership capabilities and can function as the Lead Technician in the work crew

    Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

    Associate

     

    Preferred Disciplines: Instrumentation Technology

    Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

     

    ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.5.3.1, 4.5.3.2, and 4.5.3.3 and Regulatory Guide 1.8, Revision 4, Staff

     

    Regulatory Guidance, 1.5 for Radiation Protection Technicians Education requirements: High school diploma

    Minimum experience for the position:

    Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience 1 yr.

     

    Note: In regard to “related experience” for radiation protection technicians, 2000 working hours is acceptable as representing one year of experience. There is no expectation of a minimum timeframe for accumulating these 2000 hours (e.g., not less than 40 weeks), nor is there a limit applied to the amount of hours that can be credited in a week. However, no more than 2000 hours can credited toward related experience for radiation protection technicians in any one calendar year.

     

    REFER to ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.1, for guidance on alternatives to degree requirements, experience substitution for education, and alternatives to experience (not allowed for Special requirements)

     

    Note: Dominion Energy minimum requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.
