The Workplace Experiences (WEX) team is looking for talented **Principal Software Engineer** passionate about building modern, intelligent web experiences that power SharePoint and Microsoft 365. Our team drives the evolution of SharePoint—from modern portals and enterprise search to AI-powered knowledge systems and one of Microsoft’s largest client-side extensibility platforms, SPFx. We design and deliver elegant, performant, and secure experiences that help organizations communicate, collaborate, and stay connected across devices, geographies, and host environments.
We are dedicated to empowering every employee to share their voice, access company knowledge, and engage meaningfully in a hybrid world. SharePoint is the collaboration and content backbone of Microsoft 365—where work happens, knowledge is built, and organizational culture comes to life.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
+ Collaborate with stakeholders across product, design, and partner engineering teams to define user and business requirements for modern SharePoint and Microsoft 365 experiences — including portals, search, and knowledge systems.
+ Drive architectural design and planning, identifying dependencies across services, platforms, and client frameworks (e.g., SPFx, Graph, Azure). Author design documents and influence technical direction across partner teams.
+ Design, implement, and optimize high-quality, secure, and maintainable code across web client and cloud service layers — improving scalability, performance, and developer productivity for the SharePoint and Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
+ Act as a technical leader and subject-matter expert, leveraging deep knowledge of SharePoint architecture, its extensibility model, and AI-powered collaboration experiences to shape the engineering roadmap and execution strategy.
+ Partner closely with program management to define project milestones, release plans, and work items; ensure alignment with business goals and customer outcomes.
+ Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for critical services and features, guiding incident response, on-call processes, and system recovery. Lead by example through effective monitoring, triage, and service reliability practices.
+ Mentor and guide engineers across geographies, fostering a culture of excellence, technical rigor, and inclusion. Provide design and code reviews that raise the quality bar across the team.
+ Continuously evolve engineering practices, adopting emerging technologies and patterns that enhance reliability, observability, and operational efficiency at scale — driving consistency across SharePoint, SPFx, and Microsoft 365 services.
+ Innovate and influence the evolution of modern web development in Microsoft 365 — connecting SharePoint’s content and collaboration foundation with AI, search, and knowledge-driven experiences.
