Job Details:
Distinguishing Features of the Class: The PET Imaging Technologist is responsible for technical work involving the operation of Nuclear Medicine and/or Nuclear Fusion Imaging (Spect or PET) equipment for the purpose of taking radiology images prescribed by clinical providers. Responsibilities also include the maintenance of radiology files within the Radiology Information Systems, while following established departmental and hospital protocols. Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only) Administers imaging tests and treatments as prescribed by clinical providers using protocols, and produces acceptable quality radiology images; Utilizes Radiology Information Systems and PACS to keep accurate patient records; Positions and instructs patients in preparation for taking radiology images; Reviews images to ensure that appropriate information has been collected, processed correctly, and is of the highest quality; Adjusts nuclear medicine and/or nuclear fusion imaging equipment to correct settings for each examination keeping the radiation dose within acceptable standards; Assists clinical providers with various procedures, treatments, and surgical techniques as directed; Troubleshoots and reports imaging equipment malfunctions, and arranges for service as needed; Performs appropriate quality assurance procedures, tests, and measurements deemed necessary by supervisor; Prepares and maintains records and files of procedures; Assists in orientation and training of new staff as requested, and serves as a resource person and professional role model; Participates in continuing education programs in relation to PET imaging; Performs appropriate radioactive contamination monitoring and any necessary decontamination procedures; Performs related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: Thorough knowledge of modern procedures used in the performance of PET examinations for diagnostic purposes; good knowledge of the operation of all types of nuclear equipment; good knowledge in the required safety precautions in the operation and use of equipment; good knowledge of human anatomy; skill in the operation and minor repair of complex nuclear equipment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to work independently while functioning as a team member; ability to work effectively with patients; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Experience:
Possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Department of Health as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and either: (a) a valid license and current registration issued by the New York State Department of Health as a Radiologic Technologist in the field of diagnostic radiography; or (b) certification by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in computed tomography (CT). Special Requirements: Either: (1) Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, or (2) Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist *Special Note: Education beyond the secondary level must be from an institution recognized or accredited by the Board of Regents of the New York State Education Department as a post-secondary, degree-granting institution.
