    Job Summary

    In support of interventional nephrology, obtain medical insurance authorizations from various insurance carriers, complete assigned clerical duties and provide support to the Nephrology Clinical Access Coordinators.

    Responsibilities*

    + Obtain outpatient insurance verification and pre-authorizations; communicate appropriately with multidisciplinary team

    + Receive, screen and route telephone calls and messages appropriately; routinely check phone messages

    + Complete patient appointment reminder calls for IR-Nephrology outpatients

    + Request records for incoming patients as directed by Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Forward information regarding patient care, procedure(s) and dialysis access to outpatient dialysis units as directed by Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Schedule patients as directed by Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Transport biopsy tissue and other specimens to the laboratory

    + Maintain IR Nephrology patient database and assist with quality improvement projects

    + Complete unit audits, as assigned

    + Send and receive items via the unit tube station

    + Image forms into the electronic health record (EHR)

    + File paperwork in appropriate area(s)

    + Respond to urgent/emergent requests by contacting appropriate departments (requesting Rapid Response, Respiratory Therapy, EKG, etc.) and providing non-clinical support

    + Assist Clinical Access Coordinators in the Access Clinic, as directed by Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Utilize the transportation tracking system and notify patient units as directed by Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Contact Environmental Services, as needed

    + Contact appropriate departments (Security, Facilities, Maintenance, etc.) for departmental issues, as needed

    + Order medical equipment and supplies as requested by unit leadership and Clinical Access Coordinators

    + Provide coverage for adult dialysis PSA, as needed. Duties include, but are not limited to, obtaining insurance authorization, answering phones, making appointments and checking in patients

    + Operate standard office automation devices such as telefax, scanner, printer and copier assuming responsibility for basic maintenance tasks such as replacing toner and paper as well as contacting vendor for service

    + Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned by unit leadership

    Required Qualifications*

    + High school graduate or completion of General Education Development (GED)

    + Minimum three (3) years current experience obtaining health insurance authorizations from multiple insurance carriers.

    + Minimum five (5) years recent clerical experience in a healthcare setting, including coordinating complex tasks and problem solving with limited supervisory direction, as evidenced by references and performance evaluations

    + Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

    + Knowledge of standard office equipment

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and procedures

    + Excellent written and oral communication skills

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

     

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
