    Job Summary

    Are you a tech-savvy, detail-oriented person who loves a good challenge? We need someone to administer our Digital Preservation System ( DPS ) so that the unique archival files held within our DPS are still accessible 50 years from now. We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about preserving history, loves to solve complex data problems, and is fascinated by digital management and file format migration.     The Digital Preservation Systems Administrator reports to the Assistant Head of Digital Preservation and is part of the Digital Preservation team within the division of Digital Library Services. The DPS Administrator devises workflows for and administers the back-office environment of the Library’s DPS as well as retrieves archival files for stakeholders, implements processes to increase DPS functionality and collaborates on broader digital preservation related projects with our digital preservation team.

     

    This position is currently designed as a hybrid of on-campus and remote work. Specific telecommuting arrangements will be based on the needs of the position and authorized at the discretion of the supervisor.

    Responsibilities

    Pre-ingest tasks

     

    + Manages the workflows of various departments to ensure archival files are deposited into DPS correctly.

    + Coordinates the deposit and arrangement of SIMP -produced archival files in DPS .

    + Coordinates with the Born-digital Preservation Analyst on the deposit of legacy and born-digital archival files into the DPS .

     

    DPS administration tasks

     

    + Oversees all ingestion into DPS , organizes objects into collections and sets, and resolves ingest/workflow errors.

    + Creates queries and reports for multiple stakeholders and implements regular, ongoing checks within DPS .

    + Develops plug-in expertise and management to expand DPS functionality and exports IEs from DPS at client request.

    + Works with IT to schedule and test hot fixes and new versions as well as the vendor to troubleshoot any issues that arise with DPS .

    + In coordination with Assistant Head of Digital Preservation, works to create and implement preservation plans and subsequent actions within DPS .

     

    Other tasks

     

    + May create scripts and templates to update IE and collection metadata in DPS as well as SQL queries to generate custom reports from the underlying database.

    + Prepares training materials and trains staff on the use of Library DPS and may supervise student staff.

    + Serves on relevant departmental and library committees or working groups and undertakes professional development appropriate for position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within areas of specialty.

     

    Preferences

     

    + Experience with Digital Preservation Software, especially Rosetta.

    + Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of stakeholders.

    + Demonstrated ability, willingness, and desire to learn new things and take initiative in an academic and technological environment.

    + ALA -accredited Master’s degree in library, information, and/or archival science or equivalent education or work experience.

    + Familiarity with command-line interfaces, scripting languages, relational databases, and web applications, including their APIs.
