Job Summary
The Buyer, Retail Sales plays a critical role in the success of the University of Utah Campus Store’s technology division, overseeing the strategic procurement and inventory planning of computer hardware, accessories, and related technology products. This position purchases products for two distinct customer segments: first, for personal use by University of Utah students, faculty, staff, and alumni to support academic and professional success; and second, for campus departments to fulfill institutional technology needs. The role ensures that the store maintains a competitive, relevant, and well-stocked assortment of devices and solutions to meet the evolving demands of both individual and departmental buyers.
With annual technology sales exceeding $12 million, the Buyer serves as a key liaison between the store, university departments, and technology vendors. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical skills, deep product knowledge, and the ability to manage vendor relationships and purchasing cycles with precision. As one of the top nationally ranked Apple Campus Stores, the buyer must also understand and comply with the contractual obligations and partnership agreements in place with Apple, ensuring brand standards, pricing structures, and product availability are upheld.

Responsibilities
Procurement & Vendor Management
+ Lead the sourcing and purchasing of all technology products, including laptops, desktops, tablets, peripherals, and accessories.
+ Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules with vendors to ensure optimal cost, availability, and margin.
+ Maintain strong relationships with major technology brands such as Apple, Dell, HP, and others.
+ Ensure compliance with university procurement policies and vendor agreements, including Apple-specific contract terms.
+ Ensure timely order placement and delivery coordination to meet internal deadlines and customer expectations.
Inventory Planning & Product Strategy
+ Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with internal teams to maintain optimal stock and product mix.
+ Manage open-to-buy planning and ensure inventory investments align with financial goals.
+ Analyze product lifecycles and technology trends to inform buying decisions and seasonal planning.
+ Collaborate with store leadership to forecast demand and align inventory with academic calendars and institutional needs.
+ Evaluate new product opportunities and recommend additions to the assortment based on relevance and demand.
Sales Support & Departmental Engagement
+ Partner with inside sales and customer service teams to support departmental buyers with product recommendations and quotes.
+ Provide insights and data to help guide purchasing decisions for campus departments.
+ Assist in developing promotional strategies and campaigns to drive awareness of technology offerings.
Reporting & Performance Analysis
+ Maintain accurate records of purchase orders, vendor agreements, and inventory transactions.
+ Analyze sales and inventory data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for growth.
+ Track performance against key metrics including sales targets, gross margin, inventory turnover, markdowns, and return on investment ( ROI ).
+ Support budgeting and financial planning for the technology category.
+ Monitor vendor performance and delivery timelines to proactively address delays and maintain service standards.
Minimum Qualifications
**EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT :** 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
+ Strong understanding of computer hardware, accessories, and technology trends.
+ Excellent communication, negotiation, and vendor management skills.
+ Proficiency in NetSuite and Microsoft Office Suite.
+ Familiarity with Apple, Dell, HP, and other major technology vendors.
+ Experience with B2B sales and institutional procurement processes.
+ Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
+ Experience working in a university or institutional environment is a plus.
