Job Summary
The Research Technician I, under general supervision performs entry level, semi-skilled, technical support research work involving performance of routine tasks for the Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute as part of their ongoing South Texas Ocelot R esearch P rogram . Position is a 6 month term with option for extension. Position will work remotely at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ M aint ain trail camera grid of approximately 500 cameras. Camera maintenance includes collecting and redeploying SD cards, maintaining batteries, and moving cameras during times of severe weather or prescribed fire.
+ S tor e and back up photo data appropriately .
+ When necessary, a ssist with tracking of collar e d felids using telemetr y .
+ May assist with m aintenance of camera trapping photo database and classifying images using a combination of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and manual techniques.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
+ May assist with other carnivore fieldwork in South Texas .
+ May a ssist with fieldwork and maintaining box trapping grids for bobcats .

Minimum Requirements
Education – High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience – Two years of related experience , especially experience working in wildlife trapping and handling .
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to – Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to work independently in the field within both private and federal lands. Excellent data management skills and ability to record and organize information.
Licensing / Professional Certification – Will require a US driver’s license .
Physical Requirements – Ability to lift heavy objects and exert heavy force. Ability to hike several miles a day carrying equipment over uneven terrain with thick vegetation. Ability to work in the field with >90° heat in thick, thornscrub habitat.

Other Requirements
+ Frequent work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends, not to exceed 40-hour work week.
