    Key Objective(s):

    The main purpose of the K9 Officer is to ensure the safety of guests, tenants, and employees at American Dream by providing an effective security presence and minimizing the possibility of a terrorist threat.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    + Successfully attend, complete and graduate from The AD Basic K9 Handler course.

    + Patrol AD property including mall common areas, service corridors and parking lots to provide protection of life and property. This includes, but is not limited to enforcing AD policies, investigating, and searching premises for suspicious activity, enforcing state and local regulations, mall rules and deterring criminal or destructive behavior by maintaining a highly visible security presence.

    + Train K9 and successfully pass all assessments, tests including International Forensic Research Institute (IRFI) annual certifications.

    + Create Objective Based Training (OBT) Plan with guidance of the AD K9 Training Instructor.

    + Maintain the mental and physical health of the K9 both on and off duty, including caring for, exercising, training and general maintenance.

    + Ability to perform all responsibilities of a Patrol Officer and Behavioral Detection Officer.

    + Complete and maintain detailed documentation of all certifications, training logs/records and paperwork related to the position, inclusive of any guest/team member incident, accident, and personal injury reports.

    + Follow Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) regulations when utilizing training aids.

    + Continually train assigned K9 to advance his/her capabilities.

    + Maintain positive control of assigned K9 on and off duty.

    + Develop and maintain relationships with external law enforcement and private security agencies.

    + While in public and representing AD, officers must display a professional decorum and orderly uniform while providing outstanding customer service.

    + Only AD issued uniform items and/or patches are authorized for use.

    + K9 Vest must be kept clean and orderly and must display only AD issued patches.

    + Respond and appropriately deal with life threatening emergencies or incident calls as directed.

    + Utilize quick decision-making skills and sound judgment acting in accordance with AD security policy and procedure and state and local statutes.

    + Sign out radio and ensure it is in top shape and functional, charged, and ready for tour of duty, sign in radio at end of tour and ensure it is in top shape and ready for next use.

    + Ensure proper radio etiquette and proper radio traffic which includes keeping dispatchers and supervisors informed of all pertinent incidents and activities according to department guidelines.

    + K9 harness must be kept clean, neat, and orderly and must display only AD issued patches.

    + Request Police, Fire or EMS services, as necessary.

    + Uphold high personal and professional standards as set forth by the AD security department.

    + Perform various public relations activities, including assisting in presenting information on K9 operations, engaging with the public, and establishing good working relationships with guests, tenants, and AD staff.

    + Monitor safety awareness practices among AD staff and tenants. Promptly identify and report any hazardous conditions according to procedure.

    + May be required to work mandatory overtime and short notice special events as necessary.

    + Regular, reliable, and consistent attendance.

    + Additional duties as assigned, inclusive of Patrol Officer duties.

    + Refer all media requests to the AD Public Relations office.

    Desired Qualifications:

    + High School diploma or equivalent.

    + Must be at least 18 years of age.

    + Must possess a valid driver's license.

    + Excellent customer relations skills.

    + Successful completion of a rigorous 120-hour in-house training program. Combination of physical training and skills training.

    + In addition to handcuffs, pepper spray and tactical baton, officers must carry a conducted electrical weapon (CEW). In order to carry the CEW, officers must receive a full five-second exposure, unless AD approves reasonable accommodation for this requirement (see Human Resources to make a request or to receive further information). If applicants have taken a five-second CEW exposure prior to employment at AD, they may be eligible for an exemption.

    + Successful completion of 8-12-week field training program.

    + Ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations, utilizing rational thinking and decision making.

    + Ability to accept, prioritize and follow through on work direction.

    + Ability to work variable and/or rotating shifts, which include nights, weekends, and holidays.

    + Be able to meet the physical demands of the position including frequent and sustained walking, occasional running, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, crawling and frequent and extensive use of hands and arms.

    + Eligible to be licensed as a Security Officer in the State of New Jersey. This requires that you have no record of conviction for crimes against persons or property as revealed through a fingerprint check with the New Jersey Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and/or the FBI.

    + Must be able to obtain clearance for accessing explosive materials through the BATF.

    + Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform duties of position effectively (i.e., timely and effective response to emergency situations).

    PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

    + Post-secondary education

    + Military experience

    + Prior experience training or handling a working dog.

    + Working knowledge of state and federal criminal justice statutes and law enforcement procedures

    + Training in first aid, CPR, and related public safety skills.

    + Three months of on-the-job experience related to law enforcement/security.
