    Description

    The Overnight Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, staff, and visitors during overnight hours at Volunteers of America Upstate New York facilities. This position plays a key role in ensuring the protection of property, enforcing program rules, monitoring facility access, and responding to emergencies in alignment with VOA Upstate NY’s mission of empowering individuals and strengthening communities.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Monitor facility grounds, entrances, and interior areas through regular patrols and security systems.

    + Maintain a visible security presence to deter inappropriate or unsafe behavior.

    + Enforce program and facility rules and regulations consistently and respectfully.

    + Monitor surveillance systems and building alarms; respond promptly to disturbances, alarms, or emergencies.

    + Perform routine safety and security checks, including verifying that doors, windows, and gates are properly secured.

    + Respond to resident concerns or incidents with professionalism and empathy; complete detailed incident reports as required.

    + Communicate promptly with supervisory staff regarding any safety or behavioral concerns.

    + Assist with visitor sign-in/out and control of access to the facility.

    + Support emergency procedures including evacuation, medical emergencies, or crisis intervention as trained.

    + Maintain accurate logs of shift activities and observations.

    + Collaborate with program staff to promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all residents.

    + Participate in required staff meetings and training sessions.

    Qualifications

    + High school diploma or equivalent required.

    + Must have a NYS Security/Armed Guard License

    + Prior security, law enforcement, or human services experience preferred.

    + Ability to remain calm and effectively manage crises or emergencies.

    + Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills.

    + Ability to interact respectfully with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, or mental health conditions.

    + Basic computer literacy for logging reports and incident documentation.

    + Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and perform occasional light lifting.

    + Valid driver’s license

    Work Environment
