Summary
Grifols Diagnostic in Emeryville, CA is seeking a Research Scientist II to join our Research and Development Team. The Research Scientist II is an expert in experimental design, execution and data analysis. This position is proficient in communicating findings through presentations and reports, planning and prioritizing activities, and identifying and implementing process improvements.
Research Scientist II will lead and perform innovative research and work collaboratively with other scientific team members within R&D to design, develop, and verify immunoassays. This scientist will initiate, execute, and interpret scientistic research projects pertaining to immoassay development, such as ELISA and/or other proprietary immune platforms. This scientist will work crossfunctionally with technical teams within and outside of R&D to innovate on instrumentation, bioconjugation, and data analysis.

Responsibilities for role:
+ Lead identification, selection, and bioconjugation of recombinant proteins to develop reagents and tools for next generation diagnostic assay
+ Assess protein stability, stoichiometry, purity using modern analytical techniques and develop protein, reagent, and assay formulation
+ Lead and carry out immunoassay design, development, and qualification using novel and commercial recombinant proteins, antibodies, and peptides
+ Develop product prototypes for multiple indications and transfer assay prototypes to process development and manufacturing
+ Proactively seeks to improve technical robustness of existing methods and techniques, or equipment through new technologies or advances.
+ Troubleshoots deviations, technical issues, or problems encountered in any stage of experimentation, collection, analysis, or documentation, and ensures adherence to milestones/timelines, and budgets.
+ Utilizes expertise in the interpretation of data to drive decisions, monitor metrics, manage queries and other GDS R&D related deliverables; skilled at resolving complex data analysis issues and coaching others with data challenges.
+ Represents function at interdepartmental meetings with regard to and communicates the actionable insights from the data analysis.
+ Independently designs/develops complex and non-complex investigation protocols or procedures, engaging the appropriate stakeholders/partners involved to plan accordingly
+ Consistently models accuracy and reproducibility, utilizing a methodological approach with meticulous attention to detail in formulating plans, protocol development, data collection, and documentation.
+ Actively contributes to patent filing activities, including experimentation and drafts of filings, engages as needed with the IP team, evaluates the patent landscape to understand FTO and opportunities for creating new IP.
+ Utilizes knowledge of processes and available and/or emerging technologies to develop new ways of working and improve technical processes; demonstrates the ability to make connections or identifies missing pieces to challenge the status quo and modifies procedures, methods, approaches, or technologies.
+ Identifies outside collaborators and technology that can drive innovative improvements and/or new methods for Grifols products.
+ Responsible for conducting root cause analysis to identify problems and seek out academic and scientific resources to define and implement solutions.
+ Organizes, synthesizes, and objectively interprets information in a clear and succinct manner; develops logical connections in data to answer key questions; considers limitations and relevance of data and information. Collects, collates, and integrates information including input from appropriate stakeholders, for solution development, decision making, and implementation.
+ Delivers engaging and effective presentations of increasing complexity with an increased proficiency in facilitation skills including active listening, consensus building, effective questioning, and impartiality.
+ Creates credible and non-complex written and oral content including graphs, charts, and other visuals that clearly communicate data and ideas. Skillfully simplifies complex data or information to create and convey clear conclusions.
+ Creates clear objectives/deliverables for group meetings or workshops, and effectively co-facilitates workshops or sessions; will acknowledge own limitations to address questions or issues and follows up with participants.
+ Proactively considers potential risks or challenges that could impact plans, and includes steps to monitor and evaluate plan progress
+ Independently sources relevant content for plan development and effectively communicates plans
+ Participates in project core teams as assigned with understanding of team member roles and interdependencies
+ Identifies and supports process standardization where applicable to ensure consistent practices within and/or across functional teams; operationalizes identified process improvements.
+ Conducts regular reviews of projects, tracks status and measures impact of performance and deliverables; provides updated reports and uses information to make recommendations on improvements or alternative solutions.
+ As appropriate, participates in operational budget discussions and relevant financial meetings with internal decision-makers.
+ Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure that GDS R&D is up to date with industry standards and current GLP and relevant guidelines.
+ Executes sound application of policies within the legal/regulatory environment to ensure appropriate and accurate development and documentation of content, information, and materials.
+ Collaborates within a matrix team structure; can identify relevant support/resource needs for matrix teams.
+ Continuously improves soft skills required to deal with challenges in a positive constructive manner
+ Effectively collaborates and communicates with relevant partners, vendor/suppliers, or customers.

+ Seeks and participates in self-learning activities to gain and put new knowledge or skills to practical use; proactively seeks feedback/insights from subject matter experts, other relevant stakeholders, or other resources and technologies for additional learning opportunities. Completes various continuing education in the form of external activities, such as industry events, trainings, or relevant development workshops. Demonstrates basic knowledge of Grifols products, customers, competitive products, and markets being served.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Background in protein biochemistry, structural biology, or protein biophysics
+ Subject matter expert in analytical immunoassay development and validation, including antibody development and screening
+ Ability to operate laboratory equipment, that may include BLI, DLS, SPR, SEC-MALS, HPLC, ELISA, and protein quantification platforms
+ Experience in method development and optimization of antibody/antigen modification, bioconjugation using different chemistries and coupling onto solid phases
+ Experience with DOE methodologies and software packages
+ Proficient knowledge of and adherence to safe laboratory practices and environmental concerns, GLP practices and documentation, and any relevant policies, FDA regulations, validations, or quality standards.
+ Open to feedback and receptive to changes, with a willingness to adapt practices or behaviors and learn from past mistakes.
+ Possesses a solid understanding of Microsoft Office suite of tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
+ Highly skilled with relevant data analysis/interpretation methods, statistical tools, relevant software applications, and the preparation of more complex reports or presentations.
+ Composes oral and written messages that are logical, clear, direct, and concise, and utilizes appropriate communication methods and tools.
+ Demonstrates active listening skills to tailor conversations to audience needs, and select the most effective mode of communication required to deliver engaging, credible, and non-complex content to a variety of audiences.
+ Ensures GDS R&D is up to date with industry standards/current GLP and relevant guidelines
+ Proficient at working in a regulated environment
Experience with any of the following is a plus:
+ Python coding, JMP software, machine learning
+ Single-molecule assays
+ Immunology, infectious diseases (optimization of antibody/antigen modification)
+ Bioconjugation and assay development with magnetic particles
+ Lab automation
+ Bringing tests for FDA and/or EU approval
+ Immunology, infectious diseases, and oncology therapeutic areas
+ Comfortable with handling biohazardous and infectious samples
+ Management experience or experience in supervising laboratory training with interns, graduate students, technical staff or scientist-level staff
+ Experience leading projects and achieving project milestones
Education
Bachelors in relevant field required, Masters or PhD in a relevant field preferred
Experience
Min 8 years of relevant experience with BS/BA; Min 6 years of relevant experience with MS; Min 2 years of relevant experience with PhD
Equivalency
Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.
Occupational Demands
Work is performed in an office and a laboratory environment. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear and gloves. Exposure to electrical office equipment. Frequently sits for 4-6 hours per day. Frequent movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Color perception/discrimination required. Occasionally walks. Pay Scale
The estimated pay scale for Research Scientist II role based in **Emeryville, CA** , is **$132,000 to $165,000** per year. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to **8** % of the company bonus pool. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
