    We are looking for a Research Farm Manager and Senior Field Biologist to join our Agricultural Solutions team in Story City, IA.

    As a Site Research Manager and Senior Biologist at the Story City Research Farm in Story City, IA you will be responsible for managing, planning, coordinating, and execution of day-to-day operations of the research farm and Crop Protection R&D internal and external field biology activities. You would also be responsible for the administrative activities for the site such as budget, safety, security and coordinating various components of the Responsible Care (RC) Program as directed by BASF policies. This role reports to the Group Lead, R&D Biology Operations.

     

    As a Research Farm Manager and Senior Field Biologist, you create chemistry by...

     

    + Being responsible for safety and managing the Story City Research Farm Crop Protection Biology operations, managing people, planning, coordinating, and execution of select internal and external field trials to support the innovation, discovery, selection, and development of new crop protection products and support commercial products. You will also support BASF’s vision for digital transformation and sustainable agriculture.

    + Managing the farm budget and expenses to fund required activities and allocate resources appropriately, overseeing landlord relations to ensure the site supports Crop Protection processes, and serving as Site Security Representative handling Responsible Care processes to meet BASF standards.

    + Being responsible for assigned components of Responsible Care (RC) Program as related to field trial responsibilities such as chemical inventory (commercial and experimental) as well as genetic resources. In addition, participating in research farm specific JSA/SOP development as well as training new interns/contractors on safe work practices.

    + Ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, company policies, and Responsible Care (RC) standards across the site and acting as a resource to all levels of management, supervision, and employees with respect to applicable regulatory requirements, company policies, and Responsible Care (RC) standards.

    + Leading field test trials at Story City Research Farm for the evaluation and development of new crop protection compounds and life cycle management of established crop protection products.

    + Collaborating within APN Biology (US and Canada) and with global Research and Development, Seeds and Traits, Marketing and Technical Service teams in selection of novel crop protection products that qualify for early, late, and full development phases.

    + Ensuring that data is properly captured and shared with global and regional stakeholders in a timely manner. Research program will effectively generate efficacy and crop safety data to support product registrations and product use directions.

    + Monitoring and providing technical assessment of new technologies and competitor solutions.

    + Participating and making technical presentations in internal meetings and regional scientific conferences.

    + Providing guidance for selection and development of protocols for evaluation of new technologies, digital solutions, and precision application technologies as a project partner with Biology Project Leads based in RTP.

     

    If you...

    Minimum qualifications:

    + Possess an MS or PhD degree in a related Agricultural, Biological or Plant Protection discipline such as Agronomy / Crop Science / Horticulture / Weed Science.

    + Have a PhD with 5 years related field experience or MS degree with 7 years related field experience.

    + Demonstrate knowledge of crop protection research processes/techniques, agronomic and plant protection practices.

    + Have ability to use standard agriculture equipment including tractors, planters, combines and others as needed to conduct a small plot field research program supporting crop protection products.

    + Possess technical knowledge and experience in small plot field research, evaluating field trials, data analysis and reporting.

    + Are knowledgeable in best management practices for resistance management and other sustainable agricultural practices.

    + Have working knowledge of North American crop production and herbicide use in crops including corn, soybean, and wheat.

    + Exhibit strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills with an ability to take complex scientific concepts and translate them into simple messages.

    + Demonstrate practical knowledge of computers and software necessary for communication, data collection / analysis and knowledge sharing.

    + Are able to travel up to 10%, domestically.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Have hands-on experience with R&D studies involving all crop protection disciplines (e.g. herbicide, fungicide, insecticide), Seed and Trait development, nutrient / water management.

    + Showcase an understanding of regulatory process and requirements.

    + Demonstrate an ability to translate business needs and priorities into R&D initiatives with specific and sustainable outcomes.

    + Have knowledge and familiarity of ARM for data collection/analysis.

    + Demonstrate experience working in cross functional regional and global teams and ability to be a strategic and forward thinker.

    + Possess strong listening skills, experience managing people and budgets.

    + Have experience managing a research facility focused on crop protection is desired.
