Scope of Job

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as an Assistant Professor of Literatures and Cultural Studies beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Specialists in any literary genre, critical approach, or topic are encouraged to apply, particularly those working within global frameworks and comparative interdisciplinary methods; diaspora studies; migration studies; indigenous studies; and/or border studies. This may include comparative studies between one of the above fields and another body of literature from the early modern, eighteenth- or nineteenth-century Americas, Atlantic and Pacific worlds, Latin American, or Mexican Indigenous literatures.

Minimum Qualifications

1)PhD in Comparative Literature or related field with at least 18 hours of graduate credit in literary studies. The search committee will consider ABDs, but a PhD must be in hand by August 31st, 2026. 2) Demonstrable potential for a strong research and publication record for tenure-track appointment. 3) Demonstrable potential for teaching excellence for tenure-track appointment. 4) Willingness to learn UTRGV’s online platform (Brightspace) and to occasionally teach online.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Comparative, Transnational, and/or Borderlands Literature. Preparation to teach a variety of literary and cultural studies courses ranging from first-year Cultural Studies writing courses ( ENGL 1305) up to 6000-level graduate seminars in the candidate’s area of specialization required.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
