THE POSITION
Would you like to play a pivotal role in maintaining the safety of DGS owned and operated buildings? The Department of General Services (DGS) is looking for a dedicated Safety Inspector to work within a variety of disciplines and specialties including fire and sprinkler system maintenance. This position gives you the opportunity to collaborate with other agencies as you respond to fire, safety, or environmental situations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
As a Safety Inspector, you will be responsible for maintaining and inspecting all fire safety equipment within the department’s managed and/or owned buildings. This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the laws, regulations, and procedures pertaining to asbestos, lead based paint, various other hazardous containing materials, fire prevention, life safety, safety programs, and associated training. Work involves reviewing building plans, conducting annual asbestos inspections, collecting environmental hazardous material samples, and conducting quarterly reviews of evacuation teams. You will have the opportunity to assist with building evacuations, respond to emergency fire alarm activations, as well as respond to complaints of odors or airborne irritants. Additional responsibilities include:
+ Completing partition modifications of inner office walls to ensure fire safety codes are followed
+ Investigating fire alarm system issues
+ Troubleshooting fire alarms and sprinkler systems
+ Completing monthly and annual inspections of all fire extinguishers
+ Assisting with fire extinguisher training
+ Compiling activity reports
+ Conducting workman’s compensation accident investigations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
+ Full-time employment
+ Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
+ Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
+ Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
+ Successful completion of the Safety Inspector Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);or
+ One year of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, healthcare or other buildings or structures, machines, apparatus, devices or equipment for compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations;or
+ An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Conditions of Employment:
+ You must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
Post Employment Requirement:
+ You must obtain a valid certification in 40-Hour HAZWOPER License or HazMat Operations level certificate from an accredited organization within the first year of employment.
+ You must obtain a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as an Asbestos Supervisor/Contractor License within the first year of employment.
+ You must obtain a Certificate for Confined Space Entrant, Attendant and Supervisor Training within first year of employment.
Additional Requirements:
+ You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
+ Two or more years of experience inspecting fire alarm and sprinkler systems
+ Two or more years of experience of safety training or inspections
