    CO State Veterans Community Living Center at Rifle

     

    The Colorado State Veterans Community Living Center at Rifle is located on Colorado's western slope in the scenic Colorado River valley. Rifle offers a mild climate, with plenty of clean mountain air and beautiful blue skies. Amidst this setting, the State Veterans Community Living Center at Rifle provides 89 beds of skilled nursing care, including a 18-bed Special Care Unit for residents with Alzheimer's Disease or related conditions. Serving veterans, their spouse and eligible "Gold Star" parents, we are committed to caring for the whole person by addressing the personal and social needs of each resident, as well as their physical and medical requirements. All staff members of Rifle are committed to providing a life of qualify and dignity for every resident. At the Colorado State Veterans Community Living Center at Rifle, our staff is known for showing love and compassion to our residents.     Description of Job

    Shift Information: The shifts for this position will vary on a daily basis, depending on the station that the employee is assigned to for the day.

     

    Please note: These working arrangements are subject to change.

     

    This position assists and supports the cooks in providing and performing cooking services (meals and specialty requests) that meet the needs and requests of the residents in the nursing home. This position also assists in maintaining a safe and sanitary kitchen, dining rooms and storage areas.

    Job Duties:

    + Serves meals, takes orders, cooks to order food, dishes up desserts and salads, puts out condiments, fruit and necessary food items.

    + Sets, clears, and sanitizes tables; washes dishes, silverware, pots and pans and puts them away; rolls silverware and sets up dining rooms.

    + Acts as a production assistant with regards to food handling as a cook, or cook helper preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner meals and other related functions to ensure timely and nutritious meals for residents and staff, to be done before, during and after all resident meals daily.

    + Fills dispensers and stocks refrigerators, cleans juice and coffee machines and fills with product, stocks resident refrigerator and pantry with food and supplies, takes supplement and beverages to nursing service for distribution.

    + Maintains store room by stocking, inventory, cleaning, organizing food and non-foods items to ensure sufficient food supplies and sanitary storage conditions, following State, Federal and VA regulations; ensure that residents have food, beverages and supplements as needed.

    + Cleans dining room, sweeps and mops floors, cleans steam table, throws away trash, cleans dish room and mops floor daily to ensure sanitation and infection control requirements are completed, wipes down tables and chairs; puts on clean tablecloths, complete cleaning duties as assigned to ensure sanitation and infection control requirements are met and completed to ensure a pleasant and comfortable dining experience for residents.

    + Attends all mandatory and non-mandatory in-services for department and facility.

    + Attends all mandatory training and refresher courses deemed mandatory to ensure employee is updated and knowledgeable in necessary skills and education needed for this position and completes all necessary paperwork to comply with state, federal and VA regulations.

    Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hrs per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a pro-rated basis to determine qualifications.     Minimum Qualifications

    Six months of experience in an occupational field related to the work

    Substitutions:

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience in foodservice Certification of Servsafe Class

    + Working in a Hospital or Living Centers

    HIGHLY DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES:

    + Knowledge of institutional food service procedures and practices,

    + Knowledge of health requirements in the operation of a food service unit,

    + Knowledge of health hazards in foodservice and the necessary precautionary measures,

    + Knowledge of weights, measures, (e.g., food scales, measuring cups, and spoons), and food measurement techniques.

    + Knowledge of techniques used in mixing food (e.g., gelatin, pancake batter, salad dressing, scrambled eggs, etc.).

    + Knowledge of meat and vegetable preparation methods.

    + Knowledge of cooking methods (e.g., frying, deep-fat frying, boiling, or baking).

    + Knowledge of the use of kitchen utensils in serving or portioning meals.

    + Knowledge of food safety related to handling and storing cooked foods, serving and storing temperatures, or reading food thermometers.

    + Ability to read English at the level necessary for interpreting and understanding written recipes, menus, nourishment labels, diet slips, portioning sheets, and policies and procedures.

    + Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions,

    + Ability to perform basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as related to calculating or converting units of measure for determining proper amounts of food ingredients for mass food production.

    + Ability to clean, cut, cube, grind, and tenderize meat.

    + Ability to clean, peel, dice, grate, slice, and chop vegetables.

    + Ability to measure food ingredients using food scales, measuring cups, or spoons.

    + Ability to mix food items (e.g., gelatin, pancake batter, salad dressing, scrambled eggs, etc.).

    + Ability to boil food items and operate a jacketed steam kettle in a safe and effective manner.

    + Ability to fry food items and operate a grill or tilt grill in a safe and effective manner

    + Ability to bake food items and operate a gas, rotary, or convection oven in a safe and effective manner.

    + Interpersonal skills, and teamwork skills.
