    This position requires you to work on site at one of our facilities located throughout Broward County.

    Duties and Responsibilities

     

    This is a specialized and complex professional Senior Health Educator working as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in the Broward County WIC Program. This position will be involved in the education, support and counseling of breastfeeding clients.

     

    This position is designated as a sensitive position and is required to maintain information in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, and regulations, as well as Department of Health and Broward County Health Department Policies, Protocols, and Procedures. This position has been delegated custodial authority for their Program/Unit's information set(s) and/or secured areas(s).

    Provides follow-up breastfeeding support to WIC participants:

    + Receives referrals from peer counselors, WIC staff, and local medical providers from mothers experiencing complex maternal and infant breastfeeding problems beyond their scope of practice.

    + Assesses breastfeeding situations and provides counseling to high-risk mothers and infants.

    + Counsels high-risk mothers needing breast pumps or other equipment for complex breastfeeding situations.

    + Provides timely follow-up services by telephone or WIC clinic visits.

    + Provides breastfeeding support outside the usual 8 to 5 working hours to new mothers experiencing breastfeeding problems.

    + Keeps accurate records by following Department of Health in Broward County WIC Program procedure for all contacts made with WIC clients.

    Provides Technical Support to IBCLC staff:

    Assists Breastfeeding Coordinator in providing technical support to International Breastfeeding Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), in the WIC program.

     

    Assists Breastfeeding Coordinator with after hour telephone triage high risk and medical complex breastfeeding client calls.

    Provides training and education in lactation management:

    + Provides initial and ongoing breastfeeding updates for Peer Counselors and WIC staff regarding high risk breastfeeding clients.

    + Teaches breastfeeding classes and support groups for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, leading groups / classes.

     

    Assists in coordinating breastfeeding promotional activities in WIC. Compiles and summaries data for presentation at Peer Counselor and WIC meetings.

     

    Completes leave, attendance, EARS, travel and any other reports as required and according to established procedures. Attends monthly staff meetings.

     

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFITIONS:

    + Willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.

    + Current employee of Florida Department of Health employees, (includes OPS, Career Service, SES or SMS employees).

    + An international Board Certified Lactation Counselor.

    + Willing to work early morning and late evening hours and Saturdays.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Experience assessing breastfeeding situations and providing counseling to high risk mothers and infants

    + Experience experience keeping accurate records for all client contacts documenting in the WIC system (FLWiSE).
