The Dynamics and Structure Group (DYS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to develop High-Pressure, High-Temperature X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (HPHT-XPCS) for probing non-Newtonian viscoelasticity under extreme conditions.

The successful candidate will lead:

+ Integration of high-temperature diamond-anvil-cell (DAC) environments with Small-angle X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

+ Development of novel inline optics at the beamline that enables simultaneous x-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy for high-pressure calibration, as well as on-axis microscopy

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team with chemists, geophysicists, and x-ray scientists, and will be expected to apply the new HPHT-XPCS technique to address knowledge gaps in high-pressure science and publish the results in scientific journals.

The initial appointment is for two years and may be extended to a third year, contingent on performance, project progress, and funding. This is an on-site role at Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, IL), within the X-ray Science Division (XSD) and the APS scientific user-facility.

Position Requirements

+ PhD completed in the past 5 years or soon-to-be completed in Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Materials/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

+ Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: high-pressure science, synchrotron X-ray techniques, rheology, Raman spectroscopy, and Python programming, among others.

+ Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

+ Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00-$117,925.00.
