Position Purpose
Perform all phases of gas main and service distribution construction, operation and maintenance under the direction of the supervisor and or the Lead Utilityworker. Fundamental duties will be assignment to the gas distribution department for the construction, maintenance and operation of the gas distribution system. This position is heavy labor intensive and shall involve working outside in all kinds of weather. This position falls under the Department of Transportation drug testing requirements.

Operational Performance:
+ Perform proper procedures for constructing, maintaining and operating the gas distribution system.
+ Have knowledge of Gas Operations & Maintenance Procedures, Company Construction Standards, Policy and Procedures, and Safety Rules.
+ All skills and qualifications previously required for the Utilityworker II and III
+ Ability to use the Mueller C1-36 and Unit 3SW tapping and stopping machine and equipment. This will be demonstrated in the following applications:
+ Hot Tapping
+ Line Stopping
+ By-passing
+ Ability to perform all functions of live gas work associated with low pressure distribution mains, including tie-ins, bag-offs, y-passes, static grounding and fitting installations.
+ Ability to locate and pinpoint gas leaks with the use of the CGI (combustible gas indicator) and make subsequent repairs on these leaks.
+ Successful qualification as a Gas Production Worker 1st Class
+ Know how to utilize the company records management and geographical information systems
+ Know how to utilize Locusview and associated asset data acquisition system and GPS
+ Be able to utilize company’s damage prevention system and ticket management system
+ Operate vehicles and equipment for snow removal.
+ Operator Qualification on covered tasks
+ Know the proper procedures for the operation and maintenance of the gas production facilities.
+ Participate in all safety training programs and exercises.
Requirements
+ High School diploma or equivalent.
+ Possess a general aptitude and skill for mechanical work
+ Possess and maintains a valid Class A Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s license based on the requirements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and/or the State where the employee resides.
+ Utilityworker II & III has 12 Months from first day in the roster to obtain this license.
+ Utilityworker Apprentice has 24 Months from first day in the roster to obtain this license.
+ Possess and maintain a Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s license for operation of a backhoe and mini excavator (2A)
+ Utilityworker Apprentice, II, & III have 6 months from first day in the roster to obtain this license.
+ Pass all required Operator Qualification Tests and performance exams
+ Requires CDL Class A and Driver Qualification File
+ Will be drug tested under the FMCSA drug pool
+ Will be drug tested under the PHMSA drug pool
+ Must reside within a specified geographic area in accordance with UWUA / B.U.W. Local Union B340 contractual agreement.
+ Be available to respond to overtime work and emergency calls.
+ Be available for on-call/stand-by on a rotating basis
THIS NOTICE IS POSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ARTICLE XI OF OUR AGREEMENT WITH LOCAL UNION #B340, BROTHERHOOD OF UTILITY WORKERS UNION OF AMERICA, DATED June 1, 2022.
HOURS: Hours shall be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
WAGE: Ultimate rate - $53.00 per hour (until 5/31/26), for a 40 hour week. Overtime rates in accordance with Agreement.
*Starting wage will be in accordance with union contract.
