The Weiss laboratory seeks an outstanding researcher at any level to join the laboratory in a role as a Research Scientist. As a Research Scientist, you’ll directly contribute to the laboratory’s projects through expert performance of a key technique used by the lab’s various projects (e.g., recombinant protein production or 3D printing and lab automation), troubleshooting, and experimental planning; such assistance will likely qualify for co-authorship credit on the lab’s publications. The role will also include managing lab duties and you’ll be tasked with training and mentoring laboratory staff in experimental techniques and scientific practices. You will also ensure that laboratory staff follow and update SOPs for the operation of its instruments, safety regulations, and the safe handling and disposal of chemical and biological waste. You will assist the PI in assigning lab responsibilities for regular equipment maintenance and the smooth running of lab operations. In addition, you will be responsible for lab purchases and maintaining lab systems (e.g., chemical inventory, tracking of notebooks, lab meeting schedules, etc.). You will handle confidential data and must ensure that all information and data collected in the lab are secured properly, while being accessible to its personnel.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $75,000/yr - $90,000/yr based on experience. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
• Assist with various research projects
• Management of BSL1 and BSL2 laboratory spaces
• Train, assist with, and perform lab techniques
• Manage reporting, monitoring, resources, and, together with the PI, laboratory personnel
• Work closely with team members to anticipate and provide effective solutions to experimental roadblocks
• Facilitate effective communication amongst team members and the PI
• Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, budgets, and schedules
• Establish and improve procedures and processes by addressing issues and risks
• Utilize proven employee management solutions to improve productivity and efficiency
• Ensure the lab establishes and maintains a calibration program for testing equipment, instrumentation, and small tools (e.g., pipettors) that affect the reproducibility and robustness of scientific results
• Ensure that federal, state, and local government environmental requirements are met
• Help develop SOPs for regulatory approval of experimental procedures
• Bachelor’s degree in science or related discipline
• 3+ years of progressive management or supervisory experience
• Expertise in laboratory regulations
• Proven track record of successful data storage, document control, and technical bench skills
• Strong problem-solving, training, team building, and mentoring abilities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
