Job Summary
The Water Resources team is currently seeking an entry-level or early career EHS Consultant (Scientist). This role offers support in specialized scientific disciplines under moderate supervision. The selected candidate will provide technical guidance and oversight in areas such as aquatic plant management and ecology, providing operational support for power generation facilities and ensuring compliance with relevant licenses, permits, and environmental regulations.
Primary responsibilities include subject matter expertise with submerged aquatic vegetation, alongside support for other team functions such as water quality monitoring, fisheries monitoring, and other aquatic environmental assessments. Candidates are preferred to hold a bachelor’s or advanced degree in environmental science, biology, or related natural science. Specific job duties and responsibilities will be determined based on current workload and the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities
+ Provide scientific and technical support to resolve routine issues.
+ Lead field surveys and assessments related to submerged aquatic vegetation in Duke Energy reservoirs.
+ Effectively respond to stakeholder questions or complaints about aquatic plants.
+ Liaise with industry, environmental organizations, and regulatory agencies.
+ Assist with field surveys and assessments related to water quality, stream hydrology, bathymetry, and fisheries.
+ Assist in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring tasks to meet business objectives and individual/team goals.
+ Conduct comprehensive reviews of environmental data in accordance with established QA/QC procedures.
+ Prepare, review, and validate technical reports, procedures, and work plans.
+ Manage databases, calibrate instruments, and maintain accurate records.
+ Build and maintain effective working relationships to coordinate work activities.
+ Operate and trailer boats, including airboats, and travel occasionally for multiday site visits and station support.
Basic/Required Qualifications

Associate EHS Consultant
+ Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
+ In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a high school diploma/GED and four years related work experience
EHS Consultant
+ Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
+ Minimum 3 years' related work experience.
+ In lieu of a bachelor's degree and 3 years' related work experience, a high school diploma/GED and 7 years related work experience.
Desired Qualifications
+ 0-3+ years of relevant experience.
+ Advanced degree in environmental science, biology, or related natural science.
+ Background in aquatic plant management (including pesticide/herbicide application and GPS/sonar surveys) with additional experience with one or more of the following: data analysis, database management, water quality monitoring, surface water hydrology monitoring, meteorological monitoring, biological assessments, environmental regulations, electric power generation.
+ Familiarity with project management.
+ Experience operating and trailering boats such as airboats.
+ Knowledge of Duke Energy reservoirs and operations.
+ Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with agencies, stakeholder groups, and organizations like HOAs, Marine Commissions, and angler organizations.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills for conveying scientific and technical details to various audiences.
Working Conditions
+ Mobility Classification: Onsite at a company facility (McGuire Nuclear Station)
+ Travel: 25-50% (10-30% overnight)
+ Occasional to frequent fieldwork in all weather conditions
+ Mild physical activity
+ Office/computer work
+ Occasional overtime, infrequent weekends
Specific Requirements
+ Valid driver's license
+ Ability to maintain a valid Duke Energy/DOT registered vehicle Medical Certificate (non-CDL).
