Course Description
Course Description: PubHlth 501: Developing Public Health Solutions is an interdisciplinary, team-taught course in the MPH core curriculum. This course utilizes an integrated and project-based learning approach to develop solutions to pressing public health issues.
In this course, students will build on their fall semester investigation of a health condition to develop public health solutions. They will map contributing factors, assess community needs, plan programs, and analyze policy. Key assignments include a systems diagram, program plan, advocacy plan, policy brief, and an interprofessional interview. While students previously submitted work individually within cooperative base groups, this semester will continue using these groups for individual assignments and introduce a group project.
Responsibilities*
+ Hold regular office hours to aid student learning.
+ Participate in regular teaching team meetings (4 faculty and 6 GSIs).
+ Facilitate learning activities in live sessions and in lab/discussion settings.
+ Lead weekly in-class sessions with the support of core faculty.
+ Develop class activities and/or programming for in-class sections.
+ Address inter- and intra-group challenges grounded in anti-racism and equity tenets of public health.
+ Grade student work.
+ Guide students through professional interactions with non-academic class affiliates.
+ Support and manage disability accommodations in class and related to assignments.
Required Qualifications*
Priority is given to doctoral students in the School of Public Health within their guaranteed funding packages. Any positions not filled after priority placements will go to (in no particular order): 2nd year MPH students, students who have attained the MPH degree, doctoral students in health-related fields, or Public Health doctoral students who are beyond their guaranteed funding packages.
Desired Qualifications*
+ Strong desire to work in a team setting or improve team-building skills
+ Willingness to try different pedagogical approaches, including lecture, discussion, case studies, etc.
+ Willingness to mediate student discussion, including managing group challenges as they arise
+ Experience teaching in secondary or higher education settings, particularly large courses
+ Experience mentoring students in research or advising settings
+ General skills in organization and document management, including Canvas or learning technology
Work Schedule
Required Attendance:
GSIs will be required to attend two of the four weekly sessions listed below:
Monday AM: 10:00-11:30 am
Wednesday AM: 10:00-11:30 am
Monday PM: 1:00 - 2:30 PM OR 2:30-4:00 pm
Wednesday PM: 1:00 - 2:30 PM OR 2:30-4:00 pm
