About the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) at UTMB is a leader in the delivery of advanced respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine services. With **13 faculty** and **12 fellows** , the Division combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to serve patients across UTMB’s four hospital campuses — Galveston, League City, Clear Lake.
The Division provides comprehensive care for a broad spectrum of pulmonary and critical care and sleep conditions, including obstructive and restrictive lung diseases, pulmonary vascular disease, lung cancer, and complex respiratory failure. Faculty members serve as key leaders in UTMB’s intensive care units, ambulatory pulmonary and sleep medicine, delivering around-the-clock critical care and advancing evidence-based practices through multidisciplinary collaboration.
PCCSM also maintains a robust presence in **Sleep Medicine** , offering diagnostic and therapeutic services for sleep-related disorders through the UTMB Sleep Centers.
The ACGME-accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training across all aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows benefit from exposure to diverse patient populations, advanced technologies, and a collaborative learning environment that promotes professional growth and clinical expertise.
Research within the Division spans clinical, translational, and basic science domains, with active projects in lung cancer and screening, COPD, ILD, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-disordered breathing. Faculty collaborate across UTMB’s research institutes and centers, supporting innovation that bridges bench to bedside.
Position Summary
UTMB is seeking a full-time physician at the rank of **Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice** within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. This position emphasizes high-quality inpatient and outpatient pulmonary and critical care, active participation in teaching, and engagement in the academic mission of the department. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty dedicated to providing exceptional pulmonary and critical care services, advancing clinical education, and contributing to scholarly and quality improvement initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pulmonary and critical care, including management of chronic lung diseases, acute respiratory failure, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and ICU patients.
• Provide **inpatient ICU and pulmonary consult services** , including co-management of critically ill patients, ventilator management, and collaboration with ICU consultants.
• Provide inpatient ICU and pulmonary consult services to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice located in Hospital Galveston.
• Participate in procedures such as intubation, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, central lines, and other bedside interventions, as appropriate to training and experience.
• Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and procedural pulmonary and critical care settings.
• Participate in departmental and divisional M&M, quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including respiratory therapy, nursing, radiology, and surgery—for optimal patient outcomes.
• Contribute to curriculum development, clinical skills training, and pulmonary/critical care-focused academic programs.
Minimum Qualifications
+ MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
+ Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
+ Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Texas.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment.
+ Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, clinical research, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development in pulmonary or critical care medicine.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
