The Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a Senior Port-of-Entry Inspector to join our team located in District 2, Lewiston, ID. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, the ability to lead a team, and be customer-focused. This position is responsible for ensuring the highest level of customer satisfaction while implementing rules and regulations
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Lead Worker/Team Leader
+ Assign and direct the work of inspectors assigned to a port-of-entry
+ Prepare work schedules
+ Train and orient new employees
+ Identify need and arrange special training
+ Develop activity and incident reports
+ Coordinate law enforcement and emergency service agency activities
+ Attending meetings which may require travel and overnight stay
+ Write and update procedures manuals and training modules
+ Assist in documentation of employee performance
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Inspection
+ Inspect commercial vehicles for size, weight, safety, special fuels, hazards, and compliance with existing laws, regulations and policies
+ Inspect hazardous materials and commodities for compliance with inter-and intrastate transport laws and regulations
+ Use computer terminals to check tax status, registrations, licenses, rescind status, and permits
+ Verify driver qualifications such as licenses, registrations, logbooks
+ Bills of lading and medical cards and documents
+ Maintain equipment such as scales, cash registers, and computer terminals
+ Issue warnings or citations for violations
+ Determine whether to detain or seize vehicles; may confiscate registration and plates
+ Write incident reports and activity summaries
+ Set up and enforce road checks
+ Prepare for and testify in court
Revenue Collection
+ Sell overweight, hazardous materials and trip permits
+ Registers commercial vehicles
+ Compute and collects fees, bonds and tax assessments owed to Idaho and other states
+ Issue receipts and logs payments
+ Prepare bank deposits
Information/Assistance
+ Explain laws, policies and procedures to commercial vehicle drivers and trucking industry personnel
+ Provide information to the public such as maps, tourist information, road conditions, and travel facilities
+ Investigate and resolve trucker and motorist complaints
+ Assist other state and federal entities with enforcement activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Some knowledge of supervisory practices.
Experience
+ Assessing driver qualifications for compliance with federal and state motor vehicle safety standards
+ Applying Idaho and federal motor vehicle laws relating to vehicle registration, the commercial carrier industry, and hazardous material and waste shipment
+ Properly issuing permits and citations
+ Operating computerized data equipment
+ Valid driver's license required.
Appearance
• Uniform is required.
DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENT: The Idaho State Tax Commission and the Department of Transportation will deputize trainees. Background investigations are conducted before appointment and annually to satisfy state bonding and deputation requirements. Persons convicted of certain misdemeanors or any felony shall not be employed by the department to act with limited peace officer authority. Please review the ITD Background disqualifiers. GENERAL INFORMATION: Light janitorial work such as sweeping and mopping of immediate work area and working a 24-hour rotating shift is required. These positions involve lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds to waist height; crawling and bending to perform vehicle inspections; standing for up to 6-hours during a shift; working in all kinds of weather conditions; having sufficient hearing and sight to inspect vehicles; and working around hazardous materials. Individuals in these positions are required to wear a uniform supplied by the department and to adhere to dress and grooming standards.
