    The Role

     

    This leadership position is in the Vulnerability and Recoverability group in Department E46, Ship Survivability. The selected individual will be responsible for leading a team of engineers, designers, and technicians to support both aircraft carrier new construction and lifecycle support as well as SSN(X) concept development. Products include drawings, Inspection Reports, Vendor Information Requests, Total Ship Survivability Trial (TSST) support, white papers, reports, and waterfront support. Leadership responsibilities include project management, budgeting, Labor Resource Management, technical analysis review/concurrence, deviation resolution, and technical oversite.

     

    Prospective candidates should be able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings both verbally and in writing. This position requires regular communication with various NNS departments and with various external Government and Navy customers. Waterfront support and engagement is essential to the success of this team. Strong leadership, analytical and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently are required.

     

    Security is extremely important element of this position. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a top secret level clearance and demonstrate a complete knowledge of our NNS security procedures and the OPNAVINST’s contained within applicable contracts.

     

    Must Have

     

    Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.

     

    Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

     

    Nice to Have

    Prospective candidates should possess the following skills and/or the passion to learn and grow with the team:

    • Strong background and knowledge of Survivability, Vulnerability systems, and Recoverability requirements for aircraft carriers and submarines

    • Knowledge of ship structural design, materials and welding

    • Knowledge or experience of distributive systems (vital and non-vital) and their importance to survivability

    • Knowledge of damage control, firefighting, navy policy

    • Experience with product model and digital work packages

    • Knowledge or experience with FEA

    • Knowledge or experience with weapons effects

    • Knowledge of classification and security requirements

    • Prior submarine and/or carrier experience a plus
