Position Description
The Safety Coordinator is a full time Civil Service position that oversees the safety program for Water Services. This includes recommendation and/or preparation of safety education and training programs, investigating accidents, supervising safety staff and conducting departmental safety inspections and working with service providers for fire safety inspections and deficiencies. Performs related duties as required.
Employees at MWS work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in our community. Our dedicated, diverse workforce provides high quality drinking water and the best in wastewater treatment, and storm water management services for our customers in the Nashville-Davidson County area. Our employees work together to service more than 210,000 water and 216,000 sewer accounts. We are looking for highly engaged individuals to join our team.
Typical Duties
+ Oversees and implements a comprehensive departmental safety program including fire safety, accidents and injuries and the injury-on-duty programs.
+ Prepares daily, monthly and annual reports concerning accidents/incidents and keeps departmental safety records.
+ Keeps departmental safety manuals, library, and related materials current.
+ Monitors departmental safety equipment, implements and monitors safety rules and work practices for the department.
+ Assists with investigation of accidents and analyzes vehicular and employee accident data.
+ Compiles statistics to determine trends and causes of accidents; recommends corrective actions to management as needed.
+ Routinely inspects work areas, equipment, vehicles and other areas of high accident risk or unsafe work conditions and conducts or oversees safety training/program for employees and conducts safety inspections.
+ Monitors and maintains safety expenditures including approval of relevant service provider estimates.
+ Consults with all levels of management on practices and techniques to eliminate accidents and consults with the Legal Department concerning insurance claims.
+ Investigates complaints of hazardous working conditions and forwards reports to the Department Leadership.
+ Supervises, evaluates, trains counsels and corrects employees.
+ Oversees departmental Substance Abuse program.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of industrial/occupational safety experience.
*Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education on a 1:1 ratio.*
LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of OSHA and TOSHA regulations
+ Knowledge of general or departmental safety rules, procedures, and work practices
+ Experience writing comprehensive narrative and statistical reports
+ Experience in planning, organizing, and conducting safety programs, safety inspections and investigating accidents
